Maybe one possible difference between us is that you thought he was being signed to a large deal as a sign of what he was expected to become, but I thought the deal was based on what he had done up to now. I thought he was underpayed the last few years

I'm not sure if this is what you're suggesting, but I don't think a team should ever pay a player simply out of fairness, or whatever the concept is, to reward them for their past play.  Contracts should only be based upon the present and the future.  If they were underpaid in the past, that's really not the team's problem, and I think it's irresponsible to over-compensate somebody just because of past performance.

I agree with you there. What I'm saying is the best indicator of future performance is past performance. I think Chris Paul will probably average in the 20ppg range this year cause that's what he did last year. I think Rondo will average in the 10-12ppg range this year cause that's what he did last year. What he is doing now isn't surprising to me, and wouldn't surprise me if he continues to do it, and would be earning his contract to me. I didn't expect him to sign for 11mill and then suddenly turn all-nba

Interesting.  See, at his current level, I think he's vastly overpaid.  I only like the contract on the thought that he's going to improve and finally put his game together on a consistent basis.  If he develops as he could, we have a steal.  If he stays stagnant, I think it's going to be a big mistake.

I went with the only move that is going to have a major effect on the future of this ball club and that is the Rondo signing. I know he hasn't necessarily lived up to his 11mill per year yet, but it's early and he is so dynamic that I think it will turn out to be a great signing. Sure, he may never be Paul/Williams, but if he is very very good and sometimes an all-star, then I will be perfectly happy. I don't want this team to fall into oblivion after the big three are gone and I think this is a great first step.

2nd place would be Marquis Daniels...hopefully we can keep him beyond this year...

To answer your question about a post ago I think he's likely to continue to be a good player who is capable of occasional excellence, but I don't think he'll become Chris Paul or Derron Williams

I'm amazed that almost nobody is picking Rondo. Getting him for 11mill is like getting Chris Paul for 15.

Are you suggesting he's underpaid?  Because, based on performance, I'd put him closer to Jose Calderon than I would Chris Paul or Deron Williams.

Hopefully he gets better, but so far, his play hasn't justified $11 million per season.

  He's way underpaid. What's he making, $2-3M this year? He was better than Calderon in his 2nd year, he's way better now. He's shown quite a bit of improvement from last year, in spite a his poor shooting (which, along with his scoring, seems to be your main measuring stick for Rondo's value). By the way, in case you hadn't noticed, Calderon's regressed quite a bit this year.

Who knows about Rondo?  He has certainly played like crap the last few games. He's not a player who is easy to categorize.

But the best move has to be either Sheed or Daniels, particularly at the price they paid.

I think that the Rondo extension will have the biggest long-term impact, and bringing Wallace to Boston will have the biggest short-term impact.  However, these were obvious moves to improve the C's that just about any GM could have figured out.

The Marquis Daniels deal proves to me that DA is really doing his homework looking for just the right guys (so does his minor hit with Shelden Williams, wow!).  So this is my pick because it wasn't so obvious, and Daniels has been busy thus far showing us all how much we needed him.

  As of today I'd be tempted to go with Williams because he's a real diamond in the rough. Daniels turned down more money from other teams but anyone could have ha d Shelden for the minimum and he's going to add valuable depth this year.

Williams was the smartest.  Daniels was a no brainer great signing for the price.  I'm not as high on Sheed as most of you guys.  I prefered McDyess.  First of all, he's no bargain for his production.  I agree with Roy's assessment of him.  It's always something with this guy, everyone always thinks he's so much better than his production shows.  To me he's a smart skilled player who chooses to be a lazy 3pt shooter.  He's not just very productive over the long term.  And I know most bloggers think he's just going to turn it on and be great in the playoffs, but what you see is what we're going to get.

Thanks, Moiso ... saved me a bunch of typing, as I agree completely with your comments here. Shelden is the real surprise for me, and another one of those acquisitions that proves Danny, (et al), has a genius for finding talent where many wouldn't. Sheed is Sheed, and there are no surprises there, and Marquis was a bargain, (albeit a great one), but Shelden has been a breath of fresh air ... just when we needed it. Big Baby's going to have a hard time replacing those minutes! (TP)

Marquis first for me because I was really skeptical about him, I thought he was "Tony Allen 2.0" but he is clearly the bench player who has surprised me the most, and I love his game and his IQ. He is the core of our 2nd unit and even though his stats don't show it, he is the most important player of the bench. In one player, we've got all we need (ball handling, good to great D, passing game, good vision, and effective low post and midrange game) for the second unit, expect the shooting touch.

Second, I will have to go with Rasheed. He is in a slump right now but still, he was targeted by many teams and Danny (and Doc + the Big Three) managed to convince him to come to Boston. I'm not worried about his shooting struggles, he will be a big help for us during the season and the playoffs.

And third, Shelden! Didn't expect anything of him and he has been the most consistent Celtic out there. Hopefully he will be able to contribute the same way even if Baby "steals" him his minutes when he returns.

It's crazy to me that people still think Sheed is allstar quality.  Sheed is as much of an allstar as Stephon Marbury.
