There has never been a worse year for Boston Sports fans.

- The Steelers win the Super Bowl going 3 trophies up on the Pats (I always thought the Brady era would result in us having the most SB's).
- The Stanley cup goes to Pittsburgh allowing the city to take the title of "City of Champions" from us.
- The Lakers win the NBA championship inching them closer to the Celtics record of 17 titles... A major fear for any true Celtic fan.
- Yankees win their 27th World Series.

Could it be any worse?

At least Montreal didn't win the Stanley Cup.

Haha..count your Blessings, Boston Sports fans...

I am a Virginian...my favorite football team is the Redskins. My baseball team is the Braves (our Triple A affiliate is in richmond, hence my choice of baseball teams).

The Red Sox (my 2nd fav baseball team) will continue to be VERY competitive, and the Patriots will as well.

Celtics, Bruins, and Red Sox all made it to the playoffs.  Yes, it could be worse.

I hear that, and the Pats will too. I'm just talking about titles. I would have rather the Celtics missed the playoffs last year than the Lakers win it all...

Very true.  Anybody remember the '90s?

The 90's were terrible too. but can you think of a year in the 90's that has been worse than 2009?

2000 was pretty bad.

The Yankees and Lakers won, while the Sox and Celts missed the playoffs.  The Pats were 5-11, and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row.  The Bruins failed to make the playoffs, as well.

I'm not sure which is worse, being in contention and then losing, or being completely terrible.  There was very little redeeming about 2000 for Boston sports (although things did get better the next year, of course.)

Worse in what regard?  The fact that hated opponents won titles or the fact that Boston sports were terrible?

There were years when both teams playing at the FleetCenter were terrible.

Nicley done Roy. 2000 offers stiff competition.

good perspective. i used to teach a school (NCAA I) football team that won exactly ONE game in 3 years.

compared to that, watching boston sports is a joy.

I guess it depends on your personal outlook on sports.  Personally, I don't care that much about who wins championships if it is not MY team.  I mean, I would prefer if it wasn't the Lakers or Yankees, but it really does not affect me that much.

So If the choice is between having all, or most of my favorite teams not even make the playoffs versus having 3 of them make the playoffs, but none winning the championship...I will take the playoffs every time.

I can certainly understand where you are coming from though, because I know a lot of people like to hate other teams as much as they love their teams...but that just isn't how it works for me.

Being in contention and then losing, easy.

We Boston/NE sports fans have been spoiled this decade.  Keep in mind that in 2000, Red Sox fans never thought the Red Sox would ever win a World Series again, everyone knew the Pats were awful, and the Celtics would never regain the glory days of the 80s.

It would have been hard to predict in 2000 that over the next 8 years the Red Sox would win 2 World Series (the first in dramatic fashion, after coming back from being down 0-3 to the hated Yankees), the Patriots would win 3 of 4 Superbowls, and the Celtics would beat the heavily favored Lakers to win banner #17 (again, in dramatic fashion, by blowing out the Lakers in a record final game).

Now a decade has passed, and we expect the same.  We have been spoiled.  So when we don't get it, it is crushing.  Before, we expected to lose, so losses weren't so bad.  I gotta go with 2009 being worse than 2000.
Celtics fan for life.

I actually think we’ve been fairly fortunate in 2009.

The Pats are currently 5-2.

A Celtics teamwithout Kevin Garnett won one of the most incredible playoff series ever and brought the Eastern Conference champs to 7 games. Now they're 6-0 and are looking like the best team in the NBA.

The Red Sox made the playoffs for the fourth straight year. (So easily taken for granted nowadays)

The Bruins became relevant again.

I had a lot of fun watching sports in 2009. Pardon me, while I continue counting my blessings…

Actually, any true Celtics fan knows that the 5 titles from Minnesota don't count because they are ancient history (pre-shot clock and goaltending), and that they belong to no NBA franchise because they came in Minnesota.  Also, the Kings are the real champs from '01-'02 because game 6 of the WCF that year was fixed. (and for the love of God, I will not argue this fact with ANYONE.)
