I am about 300 pages into it and I have to say its very entertaining. The Russel vs Wilt chapter is a must read and he kills that argument once and for all (great if your a Celtics fan).

More then anything it's a book about Simmons love for the NBA. A league that is always criticized and never celebrated enough by the main stream media for a bunch of reasons. I am a Celtics fan first and an NBA fan second and a Bill Simmons fan third.

So anyways so far so good. I love that he talks about Elgin Baylor and Bill Russel's role in the civil rights movement. (something that does not get talked about enough). I also like how the book is basically 700 pages of articles that we did not get see these last 3 years.

I am only about 150 pages through the book, and I like it so far but do have some issues with it.

First, in the Isiah chapter, it drives me insane that even by his own account, he is completely cordial to Thomas and appears to cave during their conversation, saying that it is due to a mutual love of basketball.  In the book, he goes right back to bashing him.  I don't know that this is a very honorable aproach to take.

Second, he makes the argument that players today are no better than players of previous eras, using the analogy of comedians to try to make this "work" and to prove his point.  He essentially uses his own arbitrary opinion of comedy and tries to make the parallell to basketball (a far more measurable and objective entity).  I know this is his style, but this is supposed to be a serious basketball book.

The Russell/Chamberlain chapter was good, and had some great points in it, but at the same time didn't sit all that well with me.  The whole point of the chapter is based on "the secret" (the secret about basketball is that it's not about basketball).  In the case of Russell/Chamberlain this is definitely true, Russell showed up when it mattered, his teammates loved him, and he would do anything he had to in order to win.  Fine, agreed.  But in the same breath (somewhere in the 150 pages I read) he praises the 01 Lakers as one of the best team ever, and conveniently pretends that "the secret" doesnt exist.

I'm not bashing the guy, and I quite enjoy reading his columns.  But I was hoping for a serious and well thought out basketball book when I bought this, not a series of stories, antecdotes, and opinions that loosle come together and often conflict (so far).  That being said, this comes across more as a 700 page column than a serious basketball book...but again, I am only 150 pages through the thing.  I'll update after another 150 or so.

"300 pages into it"?  How long is the book?

I plan on picking it up after I finish studying and taking my next section of the CPA exam on Nov. 18th.  Looking forward to checking it out.

Its right around 700 pages.  Maybe 250 of which are footnotes.

Yeah, Simmons loves his "footnotes".  He had a ton of them in the Red Sox book of his.

Yeah he definitely does, and they are interesting, but can get a little bit distracting at times switching between regular text and footnotes.

Bump!

I'm 300 pages into it and the books just gets better and better (and the first pages are already very good). The "What if?" and "MVP" Chapters were awesome, and now I'm just starting to read the Hall of Fame Pyramid system imagined by Simmons, and it makes a lot of sense. Add to this his usual sense of humor and hilarious footnotes, and a reference to Bill Walker as the best "happy to be there 12th man in Celtics history", and you've got an excellent book. I highly recommend you to read it!

200 pages in and loving it. I'm purposefully not reading it on the train so I can savor it. Having one of my favorite writers writing about my favorite sport is a real treat.

Simmon's style is irrevent, so if you picked up this book expecting a dry analysis of the NBA, you came to the wrong place. For those of us who don't mind Real World/Rocky V references sprinkled liberally Simmons is the man.

I'm really enjoying the "How We Got Here Section" which is a overview of the Association's history. Really well written and its amazing how Simmons is able to capture the tumult of the ABA/NBA merger, race relations, and the evolution of the game in just one chapter.
