Well I'm glad they'll at least have a conversation about it.

I still doubt the two sides will agree on a number.

Can't see it happening, even if the C's make a strong offer.  I think Rondo and, more importantly, his agent, know that playing out the year is much more likely to increase than decrease his value.

Yes, although there is always the risk of injury.  If the offer is good enough, they might be tempted to take it.
Celtics fan for life.

All it takes is a blown ACL (knock on wood) to change that equation.

I think both sides will listen, but still be too far apart. I think the Celtics will offer a Harris/Calderon sized deal, and they'll want more than that.

I really hope they lock him up before the deadline but I don't see the two sides reaching an agreement until after Rondo gets a taste of free agency. Rondo "walking" would set this franchise back big time. But I think he'll get his deal next summer and the torch will be passed in the form of the letter C... Eventually anyway.

Almost wonder if a three-year deal at something like $32M makes the most sense for both parties.  Rondo gets some more guaranteed money (risk of injury is especially real with how hard he plays).  Team keeps some flexibility if the money goes to his head.  If Rondo grows a jump shot and some more consistency in the next few years, he gets to become a free agent fairly soon (Rondo + a jump shot + a couple titles = $16M/yr player).

Yes, I just heard this on WEEI too... This would be the best birthday present ever! Lets get this deal done

This will be interesting as it plays out. If Rondo turns it down the numbers will surely be leaked before long. Then next summer, Ainge will be watching what other teams offer in a down economy. Very few teams are going to offer him more than Devon Harris money if he doesnt have an All Star season. The fact that he gets his numbers playing next to three of the top players in the game who are future HOF players will be factored in. He is not the type of player than can carry a team alone like a Pierce or C3Po.

Point is, Rondo could easily end up with less money next season.

Remeber that Devin Harris averaged 10/3/4 the year before he signed his deal and was nowhere near being an all-star. Also, Rondo's numbers are generally a little better, not worse, when one or more of the big three are out. It's not like they raise his stats.

Its hard to say what would his numbers be without the big 3. Rondo's weakness requires a certain sort of team around him, otherwise he wouldn't be nearly as effective.

*shrug* Hopefully we'll know more soon.
