Unfortunately, pharmaceuticals only treat the symptom, not the problem, which is usually a mix of physical, mental and emotional strain of some kind. Sleep medication is generally a short-term fix, (and very often addictive or at least dependency-prone), and should be used only temporarily, while the patient and his doctor assess his health and try to determine and purge the catalyst for the insomnia. The best route is to see a sleep specialist, which generally translates into a physician who specializes in pulmonary medicine, along with counseling. Hope this helps.

Follow the advice above and you end up with some quack taking 500 of your hard earned dollars, only to tell you to buy a 5 buck bottle of pills.

Real great advice ... if that's what your doctor's about, then it's time for a new one.

I suppose you have already tried the following, but here it goes:

1. Avoid having late dinners, and avoid big meals in the evening

2. Try walking much in the evening, or doing some bike maybe

3. Mentally try and avoid thinking of the problems that you may have had during the day (this is the most difficult)

4. Drink some Melissa or other herbal drink

5. Have a clean aired room. Or avoid having too many things in your bedroom. It's important to feel at ease in the bedroom. Maybe change something in the room, the position of something, I don´t know

6. You can always check with the doctor.

ill air it out here esince im obviously still up and have not slept in a month plus.
In the past three years my mother died from committing suicide, my grandma passed away (technically from liver failure, but really more cause she lost her will after my mother) and my dad was diagnosed with cancer. I know people all over the world have had a million worse things happen to them. However, as far as me goes, I am simply left with insomnia and an extremely troubled mind. I dont want to become a sleep pill addict or anything else, but it is really touching the advice i have gotten from you guys. I will definetely try some of them. Honestly guys, I appreciate your input more then you can imagine. Its a crazy 21st century deal, but a bunch of fellow celtic fans helping out a hurting guy on the forums late night is truly something to respect and feel good about. I am doing my best and I will battle through it. Keep the suggestions coming and some celtics wins will definittely not hurt

Real great advice ... if that's what your doctor's about, then it's time for a new one.

Hey, just being realistic and trying to save the brother some $$.  Honestly though, they will babble on about stress, diet and whatever else google says, but will ultimately prescribe pills.

There are many good doctors in this world, (believe it or not), and some actually care about their patients, and not getting pharmaceutical kickbacks. Most also realize that pills for sleep are just a temporary fix, and not a solution to the problem, and will go about fixing the cause, not the symptom.

Hey guys,

OK, first let me say there is no "cure" for insomnia.  With that said, here are some tips that can help.

1. Make sure that the place you sleep is used only for sleep.  You should not use your bed for anything other than sleep.  This can really help to clear your mind, and condition you to sleep when you are supposed to.

2. Make sure that your bedroom is incredibly dark.  Light suppresses Melatonin, which is a hormone that promotes sleep.  If you need to have some lights in your room, use red lights, as those do not affect the circadian system as much as white, blue, or green lights.

3. Similarly to #2, make sure you get enough light during the day, and dark at night.  This is what resets your natural biological (or circadian) rhythm, and allows you to sleep more easily.

4. Try to keep a regular schedule.  This will also help keep your circadian rhythm entrained, and will help you get good sleep.

5. Deal with any emotional or mental things you need to deal with.  A lot of insomnia is caused by simply being too stressed, and simply won't go away until you deal with the stress.  I would recommend seeing a therapist, if this is your problem, and it is constantly keeping you awake at night.

6. And finally, stay away from too many of those drugs.  They are just a quick fix, that in many cases will just make it impossible for you to sleep without them, and they don't really fix the problem, just mask it.

Wise words from other bloggers, and these things can definately work.  Obviously its an ongoing problem, so as Bakhu says, its more likely mental at the moment.

We feel for ya - going thru what you have gone through lately.  Do you have other family to lean on?

As i mentioned, i feel that a doctor will only prescribe pills initially - which isnt such a bad thing as they can achieve a desired result.  If the problem persists they may look at other theraputic alternatives.

See your local GP and take it from there i guess. Good luck
