Davis has come to camp in the best shape of his NBA career. Listed at 6-foot-9 and 289 pounds, Davis said he shed so much weight during his offseason workouts that none of his regular No. 11 practice jerseys fit him, so he is sporting a smaller size, with the number 48 on it.

“That’s what I have been working on this offseason, staying in shape,” Davis said. “I want to make sure that I’m in shape because you never know when it might be your time. That’s all I’m looking forward to — helping my team whenever they need me.”

More on the weight loss:

Quote
“I really don’t know,’’ Davis said when asked yesterday how much he weighed. “I’ve lost and I’ve leaned out a lot. I’ve lost, I’ve just been working hard. But I can lose as much weight as possible and if I don’t maintain it throughout the season, if I gain 20 pounds by the playoffs, it doesn’t matter. I just want to be consistent, and that’s what I’ve been learning to do - be a professional and be consistent, every day.’’

Asked about the weight clause, awarded annually, Davis said, “That’s a big reason, too. The bonus is huge. I wouldn’t agree to it if it wasn’t attainable.’’

But Davis, who was listed at 289 pounds last season, said he is not watching the scales.

“I have to weigh a certain weight at a certain time,’’ he said. “I have to find out what time and what the weight is. I just look at my body - you know when you get fat. You have to know who you are and you’ve got to know your body.’’

While I'd prefer BBD's motivation to lose weight to come from within, it's worth $500,000 per season in bonuses to make sure he stays in shape.

I hope he continues with the conditioning work. It will pay off for him in terms of performance. He already has a nice motor for a big, but more speed (please) would open a new realm of possibilities. My hope is that he will improve to the point where we can eventually use him briefly on some of the bigger threes in the league. It will certainly take good footwork and positioning but I think it can be done. Lebron? Prince? Melo? Marvin Williams? Dunleavy? Thornton? There are a few more, I think.

Certainly a better option than Scal, Doc let the redhead take the PF on certain matchups.

More than speed, I hope his jumpshot gets even better and his lift around the basket substantially improves.

The stupid part is that if he'd done this a year or two earlier it probably would have been worth a lot more than $500k a season.

I know why they are doing this for him but I hope it doesn't take away from his strength, which is probably his biggest asset.  He can push pretty much anyone out of the box.  I just hope he's only losing fat and keeping the muscle.

According to BBD, that's not a concern:

Quote
Glen Davis said he has lost “20 to 25 pounds” but that does not necessarily mean he is that much lighter than his 289-pound playing weight (listed anyway) last year because he has added muscle in its place. He credits some of it to mixed martial arts training that he has embraced after watching his girlfriend do it in Houston.

He added that his goal is to become stronger, not necessarily lighter.

“I added on a lot of muscle. That was the point. My game is that I am a big guy. That’s what I do. So if I lose a lot of weight, I’m like the average player. So I kind of want to stay in my body frame, my weight, just be more conditioned, more toned. Just a comfortable weight where I can be me. Not some different person, different player.” …

From the pictures/video footage that I've see thus far, I think they're all exaggerating quite a bit.  He hasn't lost THAT much weight... at least to the naked eye.

Random question: if he is paid bonuses, does that count toward the cap?

I have a cousin that goes to Savle Regina, where they are holding training camp. She told me the other day via text that Big baby lost a lot of weight. I asked how she knows, and she told me that she could just tell.

She called me later that night to tell me how he (Big baby) was at her place drinking right now, and she offered him a drink from her bottle of three olives. She said he literally threw back half the bottle. She asked for reimbursment haha.

Yes.  Weight incentives always are included on the cap.

Why can't these professional athletes get themselves a BowFlex and stay in shape? I mean really, it's not that hard esp when one doesn't work a desk job 10 hrs a day.

I imagine when you're that large it can be pretty difficult to keep your weight down

I imagine it takes a lot of food to stay that large.

Maybe 3 meals a day instead of 5?

I think somebody that large might have a greater appetite than the normal person, but I doubt it's as difficult for them to "stay that large" as you think.  A guy like BBD has a naturally large frame and build, so he adds pounds and keeps them on pretty easily.  A guy like KG - yeah, it would be hard for him to gain a lot of weight and keep it on; that's just how he's built.  BBD is not built like your typical NBA player, so it's not that easy for him to stay thin.

It's true of normal people that build plays a lot into their physical fitness, but I have a feeling that when you're that much larger it sort of amplifies it; if you're thin, you're really thin, and if you're large, you're really large.
