ESPN Reports:

Joe Johnson has rejected a 4 Year/60+ Million dollar contract extension.

Three-time All-Star, Johnson will test the market as he opts to play out the final year of his contract this season. He becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Rondo, Johnson, Pierce, Garnett, Perkins???

I'd rather re-sign Ray and acquire some talented players.

I'd like to sign Johnson and get Ray at a lower price to play as a 6th man/shooter, but if your saying JJ isn't a talented player your crazy.

We don't have the cap space to sign a major free agent next season.  I know people don't seem to believe that, but it's not going to happen.  The Rasheed and BBD deals should have shut the door on any speculation about us being involved in the free agent market.

Yeah it'd have to be a sign and trade, which I don't see happening.

What if PP declined his player option, and resigned for less money?

JJ is the Natural replacement for Ray Ray.
to keep our team even changing ray for Joe is a great thing for the future
keeping ray and making it happen some other way its just irreal but surreal at the same time.

Right, and the player we'd be trading is Rajon Rondo.  No thanks.

We'll see, I'm not ruling out PP testing the free agency market himself. But what you said here is more likely.

Paul Pierce isn't testing free agency. He has an option for 19 Million theres no way he leaves that and tarnishes his reputation in Boston.

What if PP declined his player option, and resigned for less money?

Right now, we have the following salaries guaranteed for next season:

KG:  $18,832,044
Rasheed: $6,322,320
Perk:  $4,890,208
BBD:  $3,250,000 (roughly)

That adds up to $30.4 million.  To that, we need to add a $6.3 million "cap hold" for Rajon Rondo.  That brings us up to $36.7 million, for five players.  There's an additional roster hold of roughly $450k for each player on the roster below 12, which means we have to add an additional $3.2 million in salary.  That brings us up to $39.9 million.

Right now, the salary cap for next season is projected to be between $50.4 million and $53.6.  That means that, if Pierce opts out, we'll have between $10.5 million and $13.7 million to spend on free agents.

Even on the high side, $13.7 million isn't enough to sign a max free agent, and that's assuming that we resign Pierce for the minimum and renounce Ray Allen, Marquis Daniels, Eddie House, Bill Walker, J.R. Giddens, and all of our other free agents, as well as renouncing our right to use the MLE next season.

In other words, we don't have any cap room.

He could opt out of his contract and become a free agent. By doing so he could get more money in a long term contract. It's possible.

I would be up for a sign and trade for Johnson.

Ray and a future 1st for Johnson.  (the Hawks are that baddly ran)

Outside of that, I don't see how he could get here.

It's possible, but he won't be doing it for the purpose of giving us additional cap room.  If Pierce agree to a bargain-basement $10 million contract, we'd still be looking at less cap space than the MLE would give us.

Literally, for this team to have any more cap space than they would have with the MLE, Pierce would have to agree to contract for around $4 million per season.  Depending on how the league performs financially, that would leave us with between $6.5 and $10 million in free agency (i.e., still not enough to sign a max free agent.)

It's not going to happen

(As for Pierce getting more money long term, that's not really feasible.  It doesn't make sense to give up a one year, $21 million contract for a four year, $22 million deal.

Would a more likely scenario be that Ray gets traded straight up for Joe Johnson near the deadline? Both teams then get to keep the player's Bird rights and Johnson could resign with Boston at the max. This way, Atlanta gets a player of similar quality, a chance to resign him, which they won't have with Johnson and still keeps their hopes up for a playoff run this year.
