Today he missed camp again.. I wonder if they are working on a deal to send him elsewhere. Could be scary if they work on a blockbuster deal trying to get Stephen Jackson. So lets hope he gets released and wants to come back to Boston! Man i would love for him to be back here.. As long as his head is on straight. Anyways good luck Redz hope everything is getting better.

I'd be interested in tapping the expertise on this blog about this, but my worry is that Delonte is in the midst of a critical dilema.  If the diagnosis we've heard, bi-polar disorder, is correct then he's got a very difficult road ahead.  This is very serious mental illness and is treated with some intense medication and requires an invested support system to sustain healthy functioning.  At least that's my view.  I wonder if he can be (physically) an NBA player while on lithium or other like mood stabilizer.  And, if he chooses to not medicate, what does that mean as the disease runs its course of severe mood swings -- sometimes resulting in delusions and suicidal ideation. He is still a young man and I think most who suffer from and survive with bipolar have to go through a painful process of self-discovery before understanding how best to treat/deal with the illness.

Anyway, I am sure there are many on this site who have more experience than I do with this mental illness, but it occurs to me that life in the NBA may not be a great match for bipolar disorder even though sometimes it may feel fine depending upon how/when the person cycles through the mania and depression.  If he can play on the meds, then the other concern would be all the temptations of the NBA life -- he'll need some serious friends, a solid family and excellent mental health support -- I would think.

I just read an article 2 days ago that he was all good and ready to go.  Ugh...I just traded for him in the H2H league too.  Delonte, get better for both of our sakes!

Really, I love Del.  I hope all is OK with him.

I'm no expert, but I dated a woman for several years who was bi-polar.  She took Lithium. It made her rather lethargic, sleepy, but otherwise was quite normal (whatever that means).  It is hard to imagine playing a game as intensive as NBA basketball while on lithium. Of course, there are other medications for the treatment of bi-polar disorder that may not have the same side effect. This is pure, anecdotal speculation on my part.

quotes from lebron:

Some of the team's leaders have attempted to contact West with no success.
"We tried...we don't know if he has his phone," LeBron James said. "You don't look into it. Either he answers or he doesn't. We've been around this block before with Delonte so we know how to deal with it."

This is really making me start to worry about Delonte.  And I'm dead serious for once.  If his employer can't even find him, that is bad.

Gee, that's funny that you people are saying he can't be found because according to ESPN, Danny Ferry has spoken at length with him.

LeBron James says the Cavaliers will welcome back Delonte West, whenever he comes back.

West was absent from training camp for the second straight day Wednesday while he deals with personal issues. Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry has spoken at length with West, coach Mike Brown said, adding that the absence is unexcused and that West will be fined.

Ferry declined to meet with reporters Wednesday.

I think he's still MIA... Really hope he doesn't do some crazy crap and ends up locked up or dead. He's one of the two players that I really miss from any of our teams in the last 6 or so years.

Best wishes to D-West.. More than welcome back to Boston if things don't work out in Cleveland. I'd even let him crash at my place and we can go to KFC and play basketball with clothes hangers.

It's nearly impossible to diagnose or give a prognosis for a mental health disorder on a message board. I've worked with adolescents with several different mood and/or conduct disorders, and every person reacts differently. Some people need medication for a (relatively) short period of time, then naturally lose the need for them and can ween themselves off the drugs and be fine. Some people, while on their medications, function completely like their old selves. Others suffer from a wide range of side effects, emotional or physical.

I wish the best for him, mental illness is very real and needs to be addressed.

Oh believe me, when you work with these kids you become an expert at making light while still caring about them. You have to in order to deal with their problems.

And yes, positive routine, supportive people, and removal from negative situations often help with such problems, so maybe getting back to basketball is part of what he needs.

And if the cavs are giving him away, i'd take a chance on him for something like tony and giddens or something like that.
