The rule is it must be in the NHL, MLB, NBA, or NFL.  Also for all intents and purposes place like the Nets are in NYC. So don't pick Rutherford NJ or Foxboro. Also you must pick on the merits of the city, so you can't say "I have family there"

I guess I go something like

Boston
NY but NOT the Yankees and not the Mets
Chicago
LA but NOT the Lakers
Pittsburgh
Buffalo
Philly
Detroit
Milwaukee
Cincy
Cleveland
Washington DC
Seattle
Portland
Montreal
Toronto
Memphis Tenn
Orlando
Miami
New Orleans
San Fran/Oakland
Denver
Atlanta
St Paul/Minneapolis
Green Bay
Tampa Bay
Charlotte
Baltimore
Houston
Dallas
San Antonio
San Diego
St Louis
Indianapolis
Pheonix
Ok City
Kansas City
Vancouver
Ottowa
Calgary
Sacramento
Jacksonville
Salt Lake City

That has to be pretty close to every major metro area on the continent.

Hmm...  Well, I'd probably look to a warm weather city, in a state that offered tax advantages.  Therefore, my first choices would probably be:

Miami
Dallas
Houston

After that, I'd be looking for a city that offered a lot of culture and entertainment venues.  Thus, I'd look to:

New York
Chicago
Boston
Philadelphia

For quality of life, I'd look at places like Toronto and Portland.

I'd eliminate the California teams; it's just not somewhere I'd like living.  Visiting has been enough.  Parts of northern California are nice, but I wouldn't want to live in San Francisco.  Similarly, I'd try to avoid industrial, impoverished cities, like Detroit or Newark (home of the NJ Devils) and/or cities with a high crime right (here's looking at you, Memphis.)

All the negativity in this town sucks. It sucks, and it stinks, and it sucks. - Rick Pitino

Hard to order them, so I'll just state my criteria and then say list a few.

I want my money to go a long way, but am also interested in culture, and don't want it to get too cold, nor too hot.

Boston
Vancouver
Seattle
Portland
Denver
San Fran/Oakland/San Jose
Washington DC
Toronto
Pittsburgh
Philly
Chicago
NYC

In order...

Phoenix  - Warm weather, beautiful landscape, great culture.
Boston - By the ocean which is great, lots of culture, has "small town" feel.
Toronto - International flavor, supposed to be a great city.
San Antonio - The most visually attractive city I've ever visited.
Miami - Beaches, low taxes, nice cultural mix.
New York - One of the world's cultural hot spots.
Chicago - Very fun city, large downtown area and cleaner than you might think.
Philadelphia - Has that old city feeling to it.  I'd just have to avoid the super rude fans.

Hmm. All the low-tax rates are warm weather cities, and I absolutely HATE warm weather.

I'm a huge fan of cold weather. I guess Boston, NYC, Vancouver, Chicago, Toronto, maybe Seattle would be my first choices.

I thought about the income tax thing but really it wasn't too large a factor for me.  I figure if I am a professional athlete I'm probably making at least around a million dollars a year.  With that, I could afford to live a great life while paying 5 different state's income taxes.

Think so? Read this:

If athletes are paying huge taxes to states just because they work there how much do you think it would cost to pay the state tax for Massachusetts as a resident?

San Diego
Boston
LA
NY
San Fran/Oakland
Dallas
*Phoenix
St. Paul/Minneapolis
Chicago
*Miami
San Antonio
*Toronto
*Denver
*Portland
*Seattle

(*Cities I haven't visited, but reasonably sure I could live in.)

I'd be looking for cities with nice weather, ideally with coastline, a range of social and cultural activities, and distinct neighborhoods.

I don't know what people have heard about Salt Lake City specifically, but I'm sure that whatever it is is outlandish and completely off point.  I have lived out there and it is one of the cleanest places I've ever been and the schools, etc. are top notch in most of the surrounding communities. Yeah, if you are a drinker, you have a much more limited number of places to choose from, but they are certainly there. They have very low crime compared to other cities of comparable size and the one drawback I see is if you hate snow.  If you hate snow, then Boston should be low on your list too.  I rank this way:

1  Boston
2  Phoenix
3  Orlando
4  Salt Lake City
5  San Diego
6  San Antonio
7  Atlanta
8  Dallas
9  Jacksonville
10 Chicago

Yes, I would not want to play in Miami because I've been there and...well, I've been there.  LA is out because...well, it is LA.  So there.  I'm also not a big fan of NY because, well, I like my kids.   ;)
