Anyone who sticks out long game threads with me usually gets several over the course of the night. If someone makes my laugh out loud they definitely get one. If someone takes the words right out of my mouth I'll second their thoughts and give them a TP. Finally someone who starts a nice topic usually gets one, same for game threads and MVP polls.

Other times I just randomly hand them out if I'm in a good mood

Wow.  You guys give out TPs like nothing huh?

Agreeing with you?
Saying something funny?
Giving you one?
Saying something you would say?
Winning games?
Putting time/thought into a post?

Those are all nice things, but are they really Tommy Point worthy?  Tommy typically only gives out a couple a game.  I think the less you give out, the more they're worth.

If you back up your position in a way that makes me say, "Hey, this guy's on to something," or, "Wow, he really knows how to make a point," then I think you deserve a Tommy Point.  Also, if you say something especially clever or wise, then I'll give you one.

Other than that, a post has got to be pretty brilliant to make me go out of my way to click the [giveth one] button.  Maybe you guys are just nicer than I am.  Or less lazy.

Also, it irks me when I see people going:
"Oh btw, I gave you a TP."
"Oh cool, here's one back at you."
I think someone is trying to compensate for a lack of tommy points.

Oh btw, I gave you a TP.
Thanks.
Actually, now that I read this thread, I understand why I have no TPs.  I don't tell jokes, I don't agree with people, I don't give popular opinions, and I don't put any time into my posts (I just write what comes to mind).

Oh well.

Don't worry, I am king of the no TPs...I do tend to agree with your reasoning behind them, which makes me feel a little better about having [potentially] the worst 'post to tp' ratio.

I like Nick's, too- when I don't have to do my own research because a post is so thought out, I am much more likely to give one.

I also may give one when I see a series of pretty well thought out posts by one or multiple posters. This is particularly true in the off-topic threads, where people get pretty passionate. I am usually so far out of the loop at the point I finally see the thread that I usually just enjoy reading through all of the posts and never really post anything myself.

I don't take TPs too seriously, so I give out a lot of them.

One reason that I didn't see listed is "topping off" posters near milestones.  For instance, Fafnir was at 498, and I couldn't help but bump him up to 500.  Round numbers just look nicer. ;)

Well if that's the case people need to starting you more TP's because what's more round than the number zero three times in the number 3000. :D

I think along the same lines as each of you which is probably why my TP ratio is pretty poor too.  I admit to being confused about the consistancy with which they're doled out.  I remember having a few posts where I received a pretty good volume of feedback from readers but no TPs to go with the praise.  Yet there are many members that just join and almost immediately surpass my TP totals essentially just for joining.

I also give them for instances of appropriate grammar. For example, "For what do you give TPs?"

Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put.

Yeah dude I agree with everything you just said.
I think perhaps a lot of times people just don't give TPs along with good feedback, just because they don't think of it.  I notice that TPs are handed out much more frequently when people are talking about them.  For example, I think I've gotten about 5 TPs just for posting in this thread.

I think I said I do that in an earlier post...

Sometimes I make a bunch of threads and comments and I work on putting some fun, positive, and engaging stuff out there and I get like 2 TPs, but then I think maybe it's just cause of one edgy comment I made, and sometimes it gets in my head that I hope I'm getting TPs for the good stuff as much as the bad, but we'll never know and that's just my own issue to deal with. Sometimes I wonder if people give out TPs for work and insightfulness and whatnot as much as they do for all the "Laker suck" type stuff, cause it should go both ways at least somewhat

Don't worry about it, man.  TPs come in spurts, and it's hard to figure out why.  For instance, sometimes I'll get 50+ in one week.  Over the past two weeks, I've been averaging less than one per day.  There's really no explaining it.

Anyway, TP for your insights in the various threads you started, even though I disagree with you somewhat on the L. Blount stuff.  At least it's something to debate.
