TP's should be given to people who post meaningful, helpful, funny and thoughtful posts or threads. Any post that contributes to the thread in a positive way probably deserves a TP. You don't have to agree with the person; the point brought up may be completely opposite to what you believe, but it may be a good point nonetheless, and worthy of a TP.

I never give them for someone just agreeing with something I've said.

I give them for something well thought out and/or clearly time consuming.

Of course I give them out in trivia threads!

Something funny

When someone disagrees with me (i.e. in a trade thread) and explains their perspective.
I do not give TPs for agreeing with me.

I do give TPs when people say something correct, which means they agree with me.

yeah, i have some specific examples in mind. look, i like to discuss sports, which means i like to discuss trades. that's part of being a fan. some people get very angry when hypothetical trades are discussed, almost like it's a personal affront. So, I will lay out a long and reasonably articulate trade scenario involving, say Ray Allen. It takes a long time to write, and the reasons for why both teams might do it are explained, and why it might make basketball sense for all teams involved. then you get the following:

Poster 1: No way! ur an ideot cause only an idiot would trade Ray!!!!  ???  :o

Poster 2: so tru! TP 4 u!

Poster 1: i no! ray celtiv 4eva! tp 4 u 2!!!

I mean, when did being able to have intelligent discussions about basketball end? Heck i give tps all the time if you take the time to disagree with something I've written with a little bit of thought and care.

I give a TP everytime I get one; instantly...test it out

You can't tell or gave you the TP though.

if you got one, the system works (assuming you gave one!)

Wow.  You guys give out TPs like nothing huh?

Agreeing with you?
Saying something funny?
Giving you one?
Saying something you would say?
Winning games?
Putting time/thought into a post?

Those are all nice things, but are they really Tommy Point worthy?  Tommy typically only gives out a couple a game.  I think the less you give out, the more they're worth.

If you back up your position in a way that makes me say, "Hey, this guy's on to something," or, "Wow, he really knows how to make a point," then I think you deserve a Tommy Point.  Also, if you say something especially clever or wise, then I'll give you one.

Other than that, a post has got to be pretty brilliant to make me go out of my way to click the [giveth one] button.  Maybe you guys are just nicer than I am.  Or less lazy.

Also, it irks me when I see people going:
"Oh btw, I gave you a TP."
"Oh cool, here's one back at you."
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

I think someone is trying to compensate for a lack of tommy points.

Oh btw, I gave you a TP.

Actually, now that I read this thread, I understand why I have no TPs.  I don't tell jokes, I don't agree with people, I don't give popular opinions, and I don't put any time into my posts (I just write what comes to mind).

Oh well.

Usually, I give TPs for people who post funny or intelligent posts that backup their viewpoint very well. : )

And personally, I think some people are lucky that TPs can't be taken away. *shrugs*

In THAT matter, I agree with mgent that TPs shouldn't be given away like candy, they should be earned. Besides, I'm in college now; I can buy candy if I want without my parents saying to me "you shouldn't have too much of that, you know!".

Just my two cents.

But now you have 30 TPs ;)

The Celticsblog elite seem to get TP's for reporting their bowel movements.
