Who was a better team, the 01 rams or the 01 pats?  who was a better team 1980 us or soviet union?

IMO, you measure it by championships won.  The best team doesn't always win but history tends to treat those teams that won (no matter how flawed) in higher regard.
Yeah, thats how teams are remembered. How many other than hardcore Celtics fans remember the 68 win team of 1973?

How many will remember the Mavericks as a great team rather than a first round flame out with 67 wins?

Exactly.

Ok well you cant really compare a dallas team that lost in the first round of the playoffs with an undefeated team that lost in the last 2 minutes of the superbowl.  would the 72 win bulls be remembered as one of the best of all time if they lost on a buzzer beater?  I think they probably would.

To me, it doesn't matter.

It's going to be next to impossible to win a debate comparing all-time teams if one of the teams didn't actually win the title.  They're never going to be quite on the same level as a team that won a championship.

I understand.  But I challenge anybody on here to show me a team from any generation that beats the 07 pats in a 7 game series.

And the Soviets would've beat the USA 9 times out of 10 but on that one day in 1980, the US won and that's how things are remembered.  You can throw out all the hypothetical situations you want to try and swing things the other way but the fact remains that what happened, happened and no hypothetical situation is going to defeat what actually occurred.

Yo man I know, thats what Im saying, The soviets were clearly the better team, and I think we would all be lieing to ourselves if you say that there isnt an argument that the 07 Pats were the greatest of all time.  Because thats why my original statement was.

To me, there isn't an argument that the '07 Patriots are the greatest team of all time simply for the reason that they didn't win the championship.  That fact alone, removes them from the discussion, IMO.

Well the fact that you cant supply me a better team than the 07 patriots tells me there is an argument IMO

85 Bears, 84 Niners.

The rules of the game were a bit different, but both were just as dominant.

OK and I think Tom Brady SuperBowl Shuffles all over the bears face.  And I think the niners would be a good game.  Hence why I said Arguably the best team of all time.

Well, to name three, at least.

'72 Dolphins
'84 Niners
'85 Bears

All teams with one or no losses that actually won the Super Bowl.

Patriots beat two out of those three pretty easily 49ers would be a good game.  Take into account that athletes now are much better than athletes in the 80's and 70's.  There isnt really a player on those teams that matches up with Randy Moss.

I think its silly for you to compare an 07 team you were emotionally invested in, to two teams you never saw play as an adult and form an opinion. (You're around my age IRC Rondo, my apologies if I'm wrong.)

If we're speaking purely hypothetically, does Randy Moss get aligator-arms after Ronnie Lott knocks him on his ass?

But against their peers who was better? I seem to recall all three of those teams actually winning the SB....

Comparing between eras is fraught with peril. The rules don't match up, the stupid "athletes are better" argument is a nice binkie but doesn't settle anything either.
