Boston sends Tony Allen and Brian Scalabrine and $1 million

New Orleans sends Antonio Daniels

New Orleans then uses the $1 million to buy Scalabrine out of his $3.4 million contract. This then eliminates almost $4 million off their books, which is the main reason for the trade, and gets them really close to being under the luxury tax which is a huge concern for them. It also adds Allen, a defensive 2 to have behind the defensively challenged Peja Stojakovic, while adding no long term salary. With Darren Collison signed, he could be Paul's backup for the 10 minutes a game or so that CP3 needs a breather, so they don't miss Daniels that much.

Then after 30 days Boston resigns Scal to a veteran minimum contract for $1.18 million. Scal only takes a $1 million  hit off his salary and Boston retains him for the season and in essence trades Tony for Antonio Daniels, a more than competent veteran back up PG.

This helps both teams while allowing Boston to corner the market on Daniels' and being able to use Marquis as a wing primarily which is where he is really needed.

Interesting trade idea. I think it's realistic too but I have always a hard time thinking of TA as an interesting player for any team. :-X

Also, the latest RealGm Wiretap indicates that the Hornets are working on a trade and that Daniels is probably the player that will get traded so hopefully your trade idea is worked on the phones right now! I would love to get Daniels, thus allowing Marquis to play at the wing position only.

Here is the RealGm article :

Quote
New Orleans general manager Jeff Bower says that he isn't done tweaking the team's roster.

The Hornets will open training camp in roughly three weeks.

Bower has already added Emeka Okafor, Ike Diogu and Sean Marks to the team's roster. He told the Times-Picayune that the team is involved in talks for a deal, but wouldn't give specifics.

"We've got some things that we're working on that we're going to continue to move forward with," Bower said. "We're going to continue to find ways to improve this team, and we're looking into situations that we think will help us."

The Hornets could make another move similar to the one they made last month when they dealt Rasual Butler to the Clippers in order to improve their salary cap flexibility.

"What we've tried to do all summer is improve our team on the court and also improve our (salary cap) flexibility," Bower added. "We made a lot of progress in both areas, and we will continue to make more progress as we round out the summer."

A prime target to be dealt is reserve point guard Antonio Daniels, who will make $6.6 million this season but doesn't figure to see much time behind starting point guard Chris Paul and rookie Darren Collison.

I think its pretty realistic. I'm not sure Daniels is what we need really, but its certain that we can (and have in the past) do worse. Not sure really what he's got left in the tank, but I'd tend more towards hopeful than pessimestic. good trade.

I've always liked Antonio Daniels.

And I like in your scenario that Scal ends up back in Boston, but that part seems unrealistic:  Scal would have to agree to leave $1M on the table, which in his case amounts to a 1/3 his annual salary -- not many people would do that.  And by resigning Scal Boston commits to paying more luxury tax.

Agree. TA & Scal & (whatever) for Daniels. We don't have to re-sign Scal. This frees up a roster spot so we could go with 1 player short to save $$ & luxury tax and/or use the roster spot later.

With Daniels expiring too, I'm not sure there is enough incentive and I don't see Scal taking a 30% salary hit.  I'd love to see this deal go through though.

Yep, I think that's a possibility

However, I think both TA + Scalabrine are superior players to Antonio Daniels. I'd rather bring back Gabe Pruitt than bring in Daniels.
