Tell me... If AI is such a legend and such a team player why does he have 0 rings?

yea, there's alot of things i would go at AI for, invalidating his entire body of career work as irrelevant because of not having a shot to win a championship is not one of them. You could make the argument he took the least talented team of all time to the NBA finals kicking and screaming on his back.

It's easy to through these stones now, but not so long ago, the captain was the subject of this awesomely flawed argument, as well as the immature punk argument you throw at AI (bandage gate anyone?).

The rationale that all great players need a championship to validate there career is laughable, and a foolish argument in general. You think John stockton is a crappy player? How about Karl malone? Barkley? The list is endless.

Question his ability to submit his ego to the team concept?

absolutly, im with you there, It's clearly the major flaw that IMO will always keep him out of "one of the greatest Gaurd" discussion as it should. But i challenge you to find a player of his stature who was as overpoweringly dominant with the talent he had around him 99 to 03 or 04.

To question his heart and the fact that he left everything on the floor every night up until last year, a year in which he clearly ran head first in a wall of his own making he couldn't hurrdle, since he couldn't accept he's not AI anymore?

It ignores the entirety of his career due to your blatant bias against him and his precived "thug" attitude.

I would say an objective opinion of AI is of a great individual player who's flawed team mentality led to his inability to adapt to the loss of his ability to impose his will on a team, both the opponent and his own, that he had in his prime.

The tragic thing it's his pride, which made him one of the toughest little men ever to play the game makes it impossible for him to accept that father time ran him down about three years ago and evolve his game to suit his reduced, but still useful, skill set.

When i look back on allen, I'll remember this version from his prime (#8 is one of the best laker disses of all time):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OH5JTh3Xp3Y&feature=related

and not the more recent bitter player who can't accept that father time runs us all down eventually.

He entertained the hell out of me when he was in his prime, and for that, im grateful.

0 rings...You telling me Stockton and Malone aren't legends? Stockton was all-time in assists = team player....and nobody ran the pick and roll like that duo. Although I concede AI is not much of a team player, in his prime he carried one of the worst supporting casts ever (that includes Clipper teams) to the finals.

Wait two months into the season when they're losing a bunch.

..won't this happen independent of AI?

I don't want AI on the Celtics, that's for sure, but I don't really get all the AI-hate I have seen recently.
Celtics fan for life.

My comment was more along the lines of how will he handle the losing that he'll experience in Memphis.

I think he'll help Memphis win a few more games. But that won't take them anywhere near the playoffs or even .500.

I don't hate AI honestly, I just think he's not as good as people bill him. Scoring as inefficiently as he has over the course of his career is over rated. Especially when you're awful on defense and not a good leader off the court.

Detroit was a mess for many many reasons, but AI did behave poorly there.

He was one of the alltime overrated players.  He seems to get a lot "he left his heart out there" stuff because he's small and takes a lot of shots.  A big guy who takes 30 shots and plays no defense would never be described that way.  It's a joke.

Yeah but you have to remember there was one player playing in that decade that no other can match up to that caused all those players not to get a ring and that as you all know is Michael Jordan... There was no Michael Jordan (yes early in the decade but figuratively speaking i'm saying) in this era which made it much more possible for many more teams and players to get rings.

Oh and I'd like to argue that the team LeBron took to the finals in '07 against the Spurs had the worst supporting cast ever to make the finals.

Again, flawed rationale.

If were going to start making baseless excuses about the talent level of the opposing team when your shot at a ring comes, why doesn't AI's 2001 team get consideration for running into Kobe and shaq lakers under this principle?

and in no way is lebrons 07 team worse than a sixers team who's best player aside from a 5'11 PG was eric snow.

IT's more impressive to me that a undersized PG led that bunch of role players to the finals than one of the top SF's of all time (and lebron is, even now, on that list somewhere) doing the same.

Because AI's team wasn't that good because he is never capable of ever being on a good team because of the way he plays ME FIRST! Kobe and Shaqs teams were good but I don't think all 3 of their championship teams this decade are the best of the decade.

There next best player was Dikembe Mutombo who is 7 foot 2... And the next best player on the Cavs in '07 was Zydrunas Ilgauskus!  Dikembe in '01 was much better than Ilgauskus in '07.

Lebron's team had far more offensive talent.  AI's sixers team was stacked with great defenders and AI got to take all the shots.

Are you kidding me the only player with offensive talent on the Cavs that year was LEBRON!

Crownsy - TP for you for making my arguments for me while I was sleeping.  You summed up his downfall far better than I would have.

And I completely agree that the Detroit situation was a fiasco and poorly handled (by all parties), and Crownsy nailed it that AI's refusal to submit to the will of father time makes him look more foolish than heroic;  BUT, none of that takes away from his earlier accomplishments and the fact that, for a pretty long stretch, he was not only the most entertaining player in the league, but one of the most feared.
