I know his voice has been sounding hoarse/scratchy for the last few years, but does anyone know why? There's no way it's just a result of age.

I get a scratchy voice after I play a long game, too. Something just happens with my throat. Since its after games that we usually hear him talk, it could just be the fatigue of the night.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Could it be that he got stabbed before and had his lungs punctured? Did that change his voice? Never heard his voice before that incident, but just a thought.
Anything is possible!!!

I've heard that this is the case.

If you listen to the interview he did right after he was released from the hospital though his voice sounds fine. Although I guess the change is something that could have set in over time with scarring or something.

its probably a combination of both what rondo_is_better said and that the garden gets loud, and you have to yell to be heard. Docs voice is the same after games.

I really doubt that's the case. Puncturing a lung wouldn't change your voice like that. Perhaps if his voice box was nicked then 'the incident' might be to blame but I think it is most likely fatigue from the game.

Paul isn't exactly one known to be play quietly.  I'll wager that his rough voice post-game is a result of fatigue and 48 minutes of talking smack (and all the other yelling that happens in the game).

I would think so, but I noticed that he has the same voice even when he talks in other situations that are not post-big physical efforts (at Rasheed's press conference for example).

He clearly has a physical defect. As others have mentioned, his voice sounds bad all the time. He could have scarring on the vocal cords, perhaps from too much karaoke. :) Actually, singing is one way of damaging the vocal cords.

I hope he realizes he has no chance of having a broadcasting career with that voice. He should look into surgery.

I agree that his voice is somewhat strange, but for as long as i can remember, it has always been like that.

I haven't noticed his voice changing much since he first came to the c's at all. It does get a bit more scratchy/raspy during interviews after games which I'm sure is from fatigue and having to raise his voice over the noise in the garden. But since he's come to boston his voice has always been like that. Kind of like the bags under his eyes and how he always seems like he is in dire need of a nap during games.....
