In a letter to the school the NCAA says an unknown person took the SAT for a player, with his knowledge, and then the player used that test to get into Memphis. The NCAA said the athlete in question played for the Tigers in the 2007-08 season and the 2008 NCAA tournament. The only person who played just that season was Rose.

Ya I dunno this really sucks for Memphis because they had a great year, but I dont know, how hard is memphis to get into especially if you are going on scholarship?  It makes me question how smart Derrick Rose really is if he was that concerened about not scoring high enough.  Also really good way to teach him a lesson for cheating.  Getting selected number 1 overall
CB Draft LA Lakers: Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony,Jrue Holiday, Wes Matthews  6.11, 7.16, 8.14, 8.15, 9.16, 11.5, 11.16

Second time a Calipari team has had to forfeit a season. Maybe the problem isn't with Rose as much as it is that Calipari could have had something to do with it.

Funny how Calipari moves on to another huge paying job and another school gets screwed.

To paraphrase Casablanca:  I'm shocked, SHOCKED to find cheating in college basketball recruitment.

Rose certainly does not appear to be very book smart, but he is smart enough in other ways and like you say he is now making millions.

I feel bad for Memphis, and I am pleased to hear they will appeal what appears to me to be a hypocritical and bogus NCAA ruling. From what I understand, Rose took the SAT three times in Illinois and never came close to scoring well enough to be accepted at Memphis (which btw is not a bad school academically). He then went to Detroit and mysteriously scored well enough to meet entrance criteria, but the SAT folks said the increase was (statistically) very improbable and threw the score out. This is what technically made Rose ineligible, but only retroactively. Memphis had no idea the score was thrown out because they rely on the NCAA clearing house to verify eligibility. When Memphis asked the NCAA if Rose was eligible, the NCAA accepted the score from Detroit and declared him academically eligible to play for Memphis. So based on the NCAA’s decision Memphis gladly accepted Rose into their basketball program. Whether Calipari actually knew Rose took the SAT or not is debatable, and I highly doubt he cared or wanted to know. But for the NCAA to punish Memphis for an error that they (the NCAA) made seems ridiculous to me and I’m not even a Tiger fan (Running Rebels and Jay Hawks baby).
“Being a Celtic is, every decision you make is about the team. Every cut you make is about the team. Every pass you make is about the team. You take yourself out of it. It’s not for everyone. If you don’t want to win, don’t want to play team basketball, and it’s more about you then you’re probably not a Celtic." Doc 2010

Is it bad, that I barely even think this is a scandal?  Has anyone ever actually heard Derrick Rose talk?  He sounds like Johnny Damon with a labotomy.  He is a hell of a basketball player, but I would be shocked if he could get anything more than 600 on his SAT's.  He is proof that basketball IQ has nothing to do with real IQ.

Before the coaching job at Kentucky opened up he was heading to Arizona. Calipari knows when to cash in his chips and move to another table! Same game though, everytime....

Being a squeaky clean Alabama Crimson Tide fan I would not know anything about recruiting scandals in Memphis.   ::)

public speaking and interview skills are a form of intelligence, but not a complete guage of someone's intelligence.    Its dismissive to think so.   Also, the dude is super shy.

So he just didn't take the SAT's because he was too busy, but really would have aced them.

I am not saying he is dumb because he interviews like he is brain-dead, I am saying that his interviews are an indication he may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, and the fact that he needed someone else to take the SATs for him just backs it up.

And again, he is a great basketball player, and from everything I have heard and read a very good person.  I just don't think his second choice of careers was as a rocket scientist.

I thought I read that he three times took the SATs and didn't get scores high enough to get into Memphis so he then supposedly went to Detroit and took them and they were miraculously much higher.

My guess is he could really have taken them 100 times and never had scores high enough to gt him in anything but a JUCO.

I find it hard to believe that Rose can't get a passing score on the SAT if he really tried. He has a driver's license, so he must surely know how to read..

Just read that Memphis has been stripped of its record 38 game winning streak and also its Final Four appearance thanks to star point-guard Derrick Rose.

Seems Rose was academically ineligible.

Quiet time of year for BB fans i know, but this is pretty big.
