We play mostly team defense, but who is our best man2man defender? I can make a case for Perk, Pierce, KG, Rondo (at times), and now add Sheed to the mix. This is one is difficult, knock on wood

Rondo doesn't belong in this conversation. Not even close.

It still has to be KG though. He's the most versatile, smarter defender... oh and he's quite skilled.

Understandable. But we can't cut the other guys short. Where would without Pierce's timely defensive stops against Joe Johnson, Lebron, and Kobe. He didn't give an inch to those guys. Look at how Lebron exploited every defender this year. He almost averaged 40+ against Orlando. No matter what, Pierce is still underrated & undervalued.

It depends on the criteria.  KG is the best overall.  You want Pierce on the other teams' best one on one offensive player in the clutch. You want Perk against the other teams monster in the paint.

Even though I consider Paul Pierce the go to guy for offense, He was the 2nd name that popped in my head as best 1 on 1 defender. KG is still my fav, but Pierce really showed something in that huge comeback again LA when we were down by what, 40. In the 2nd half he switched to guard Kobe instead of Ray, and he shut Kobe down. So when needed, Pierce has got to be our best 1 on 1 defender, but KG controls the team defense(talking, watching multiple player's moves, defending the weak side)
Can't stop, Rondo!

I don't think we have a clear best 1-on-1 defender. KG is clearly our best overall defender, but Perk, KG, and Pierce are all good 1-on-1 defenders who to me aren't really comparable because they guard different positions.

True, I mean after all, he only made the all-defensive second team not first.  So I can totally see why he's not even close.

But yes, it's KG without a doubt.

This is an interesting question.  KG immediately popped into my head, but then I started to think about it a little bit more.  First I remembered the job that Perk did against Howard in the playoffs.  That was some incredible man to man defending.  And of course as others have pointed out in this thread, Paul Pierce has been nothing short of fantastic in his match-ups with some of the most prolific scorers out there.  And Rondo is one of the league leaders in steals (though this statistic doesn't equate someone with being a great defender) and he always gives the other teams point guard problems with his athleticism and quickness.

If we're going with the criteria of man to man defense, I'm gonna have to go out on a limb here and say Perk.  His ability to shut down the best big man on the other team is an incredible asset.  That stands out in my mind more than anything at the moment.  And of course KG is just so talented on defense in his own right.  You should add a poll to this thread.  Very good question either way.  TP to the OP.

Come on guys, T.A is our best defender, how can you not mention him in this thread? ???

Sarcasm apart, I think Perk, KG and Paul are our best one on one defenders, and I will name KG our best defender.

I think Rondo played through lots of ankle issues last year which affected his defense.
When healthy he is a very good one on one defender.
For one on one defender:
Perk
imo he does the best 1 on 1 job, kg is a great defender causing havoc for an entire team, passing lanes, man to man, help defense (one of best ever).  PP is a very good defender who truly understands TEAM defense.  And lastly when healthy and/or playing his top game Rondo is a GREAT defensive guard who is kind of a mini garnett.  He hasn't shown enough consistancy though to be any higher.
Forgotten man from starters Ray Allen who did a very good job on Kobe previously and does play good d.  Obviously (kool aid aside) this means we have  a good defensive team.

Short answer: Garnett is the best 1-on-1 defender on the team by a large margin, followed after a gap by Perkins and possibly Sheed (if we get Sheed from mid-2000s), followed after a gap by Pierce and possibly Sheed (if we get Sheed from last year), followed by everyone else.

Long answer:
In this thread, Garnett's 1-on-1 defense seems to be underestimated for 2 rather ironic reasons.  1) He's such a great team defender/anchor that people tend to sleep on his 1-on-1 D, and 2) people aren't recognizing just how much Garnett's team defense helps his teammates look like better 1-on-1 defenders.

Let me start with that 2nd point.  With Garnett in the game, his help D makes his perimeter defenders look like All Stars because they are able to play really tight on their man (Pierce/Allen) or take a lot of chances for steals/deflections (Rondo) without worrying about their man beating them off the dribble.  And if their man does drive, in most cases he's going to either have to pass or shoot a lower percentage shot in the paint due to the help.  And the pick-and-roll is entirely blown up.  That's why in the '08 playoffs the C's perimeter defenders were able to hold down LeBron and Kobe but in the '09 playoffs they were torched by guys like Gordon and Rose.

Now, back to the first point, Garnett's 1-on-1 D is often overlooked.  For one, he tends to play his men a lot more straight up than his teammates (after all, he doesn't have a KG as a help defender).  For two, when KG is on and locks up a player they are LOCKED UP.  He doesn't get to do it every game partially BECAUSE he is relied upon so much for help D, but when he does it he simply removes elite offensive players from the game.  For instance, in the Pierce/Perk examples mentioned earlier in the thread LeBron/Kobe in '08 still scored 25-30 ppg just on poorer efficiency while Howard still averaged 16 points on 55% FG...they were held down, but still contributed.  On the other hand, here are some of the games that KG has turned in against the elite scoring PFs in the NBA JUST in the 2 years he has been in Boston.

3/17/08 Tim Duncan: Duncan scores only 4 points after the 1st quarter when Garnett is switched onto him after he got off to a fast start against Perk.

11/10/08 Chris Bosh: Bosh scores 9 points on 38% FG.  He had entered game as 2nd leading scorer in NBA at 27 ppg on 54% FG.

1/25/09 Dirk Nowitzki: Dirk scores 6 points on 2-for-9 FG with 4 TOs in the 25 minutes he played against Garnett.  In the 6 games directly before and the 3 games directly after this game, Dirk averaged 29.1 ppg.

When he's on KG doesn't just limit his opponents, he surgically removes them from games.  I remember for the '08 season, Wyc said that KG was holding his 1-on-1 opponents to something absurd like 13% below their normal FG%.  That's ridiculous.

This is no disrespect to Perk, Pierce, Sheed, or any other Celtic.  But Garnett is the best 1-on-1 defender on the Celtics by a really big margin...he's very possibly the best 1-on-1 defender in the NBA.

KG????
Gooden abused him last year in Cavs series, Gasol did as well.
My answer is Pierce, but I must say that team defense is a factor too. That block shot on Kobe in Game 4 is my sole best play of the year, you don't see that very often.

Perk

yeah I see Rondo as a mini KG at times - especially when he kills minutes off the the other team's shot clock by taking a man on full court. It's amazing to watch how athletic he is... too bad he doesn't do it that often.

I'd have to vote Perk though. I don't see too many people taking advantage of him.

Gooden didn't play for the Cavs last year in the playoffs. AV, Ben Wallace, and Joe Smith were their power forwards. Neither abused KG by any stretch of your imagination.

Neither did Pau Gasol.

Check the game logs!

Kevin Garnett
AV
Ben Wallace
Joe Smith

AV scored 1, 3, 5, 12, 4, 4, 5 points against KG. Ben scored 4, 0, 9, 2, 4, 0, 3 against KG. Joe Smith scored 2, 4, 17, 8, 7, 9, 6. Big Z had three big games against us in but tailed off after that. But KG wasn't guarding him at all. He paid attention to LeBron and his man and that's about it.

Pau Gasol was much better. But KG still played better through out the Finals.
