Good trade or not? They were pretty weak at SS, although I'm hoping Gonzalez is not their long term solution.

If he's insurance due to an injury it's one thing, but his stats are wow bad.

I'm interested... What were your biggest problems with Gonzalez?

I loved him in Boston, but haven't seen him in 3 years.

That reds team needs bats.  I will be perfectly content with having an automatic out at the bottom of the lineup in exchange for his glove in the field.  I think Nick Green has done a good job but AGon is a huge step up defensively.

he is always hurt...he is great in the field but just has no bat....at least here in Cincy he didnt...he isn't even batting his weight and hasn't for the reds...at the start of the season he was the one guy i wanted to see beat out by some of the younger players.....210 ave is pathetic..esp in the Reds ballpark

By the stats, he has been worse defensively than Nick Green this year, A-Gon has a higher fielding % but thats a weak stat, Nick Green's UZR/150 rating is 8, compared to 4 for A-Gon. But Green has gotten worse and worse as the year has gone on and Gonzalez is smart, unlike Green who thinks he can throw everyone out and usually throws it away. If Gonzalez can make the simple play then he is an upgrade.

But just so fans know, he is WORSE offensively than he was when he was here and isnt nearly the defensive player he was. Even though he is only a marginal upgrade, i love the move just because i want cannot stand watching Nick Green flail at pitches in the dirt and throw balls into the stands anymore. A-Gon is capable of getting on a hot streak with some power for a stretch, maybe we get lucky and it comes now.

if you are getting him for defense then that is fine...but don't expect him to hit..esp with men in scoring position..i have seen every reds game this season and more often that not...he can't move runners or get runners home.

[dang it]... Looks like I'm going to have to play devils advocate on this one. I like the deal but things have to be brought up.

Alex Gonzalez missed the entire(!) 2008 season with a left knee injury, and missed time this year with elbow chips removed from his elbow. How is he still the defensive presence he was in 2006 after all this?

I'm okay with an automatic out in the lineup as well, provided Varitek and Ortiz are on the bench. But if those two are still in the lineup, then we're in trouble because that's a third of the lineup that can't be counted on for anything.

If Tito moves forward with:

Ellsbury CF
Pedroia 2B
Martinez C
Youkilis 3B
Bay LF
Drew RF
Lowell DH
Kotchman 1B
Gonzalez SS

I'm okay. But if he rolls out

Ellsbury CF
Pedroia 2B
Martinez 1B
Youkilis 3B
Bay LF
Ortiz DH
Drew RF
Varitek C
Gonzalez SS

I'm not happy. 6-9 is black hole territory in that lineup. At least Drew has Lowell to protect him in lineup A, while Vtek doesn't strike fear in anyone anywhere.

yup...he missed time this season in cincy...if he is a spot starter or in for defense he should be ok...just dont't expect him to come over and give your line up some pop...i am interested to see what the reds are getting back for him...

The 2 million dollars left on his contract he would have stolen form them? ;)

TP for watching every Reds game. That's a true fan right there.

Some Shortstop I have never heard of from the minors.  And I peruse soxprospects.com like once a week.  Not a top 40 prospect in our system
