Jerry Remy was at Fenway for the first time today since taking his leave and was a guest in the booth during the 2nd inning.

He was pretty nervous at first and got choked up quite a bit, he also made public the real reason for his absence that nobody knew. After the physical problems he developed a serious case of depression and that, not the cancer is why he has been out. He was pretty candid about it all and said he hasnt been able to watch any game on Nesn because it made him feel worse because he felt he should be there doing his job. Was honestly tough to hear because he was so open about how depressed he has been, i dont want him to rush himself back but i hope its soon because he is awesome and i cant take Dave Roberts anymore.

He got more comfortable as it went on and he said he does have a return date in mind, but doesnt want to make it known because there has been two dates that have come and gone where he wanted to come back and couldnt. He got a very long and loud standing ovation that rivaled Nomar/Lowe's returns this year and it was clear he genuinely touched he was by it all. If you missed it you should check it out when the game replays because it was great to see him.

hey thinks for sharing this. Us sox fans living out of state miss a lot of stuff like that. Jerry Remy is truly a loveable guy and I hope he is able to recover. I wish him all the best.

Sadly what he is going through is very common for recovering cancer patients. I bet it is especially difficult for a former athlete. He has so much time to sit around and think about what is going on when in his younger days he would have had a baseball diamond to turn to. I hope he pulls through because he has been sorely missed this summer. Get well RemDawg!

Eckersly is better than Remdawg as a commentator in my opinion. He's still awesome and I hope he gets better, But honestly if Remy just left and was replaced with Eck, without this whole situation, I'd enjoy watching it more. But still get better soon.

Jerry Remy was a solid 2nd baseman for the Red Sox, but there aren't many who remember him for that. He is one of the best baseball color commentators of all time. His analysis is spot on, and he is fairly unbiased as his vantage point, though clearly favoring the Red Sox (as it should be), still allows him to see the game as clear as day.

I should also mention that there are way too many color announcers who have trouble building rapport with the play by play announcer. It's not that they aren't experienced with the game of baseball. But it's an unspoken level of respect and love for the game that Remy has that others just cannot share. We can all imagine how much it pains Remy to think of watching a Red Sox game devoid of his presence.

I really wish he comes back. But I also think he should do what's in his best interests regarding his health.

I agree with this 100%.

Get Well Remy, but NESN you have a great color guy with the Eck!

Does anybody know why Eck doesn't do any away games?

I feel the opposite way of some of you other guys. I really like Remy in the booth, and I don't mind Eck, but he's not the same as Rem. It's like when Tommy isn't out on the west coast trips for the C's. Things just aren't the same with Donny. Donny isn't bad, but not what I like to see as a Celtics diehard.

And Remy was half the reason I still watched the Sox, even after they won in 2004 and 2007. I've watched and played baseball my whole life, but it just gets boring to me a lot of the time. Jerry makes it interesting because of comic humor and his chemistry with Don Orsilo.

I like both Remy and Eck and I'd love to see a 3 man booth. Make it happen NESN.

I remember when Remy played for the Angels.  I was at a game and sitting close to the field between third base and home. Bottom of the 8th inning and Remy is on third. The score was 0-0. . . . He stole home. Absolutely incredible.  Angels won 1-0.
