I love Leon, but I predict that Sheldan Williams if given the chance to develop will take his place.
With the depth on  the bench, Williams can develop with Clifford Ray and become a replacement for Leon. Sheldan Williams is the sleeper acquisition of the summer and will contribute in the future.

Ding Ding!

Round 1

Those who disliked cutting Leon loose will have a field day here.  I just say good luck to Leon except for when we face him and good luck to Admiral Ackbar always since he has now joined the Dark Lord of the C's.

A healthy Powe (which I doubt we would see this season) is better in my opinion

But a Williams and an unhealthy Powe, completely different story.

Exactly my thoughts.  Powe would have to be healthy for this to even be a discussion.

This is how I see it.  I think, while Williams has a chance to be better (it will be interesting to see how he responds to playing with the C's, and under Ray's tutelage), I would put my money on a healthy Powe being a better player.  But the chances of Powe being 100% at any time this year are pretty slim.

Yeah, I agree.  When healthy, the players are equal rebounders, Williams is a better defender, and Powe is a better and more efficient scorer.  With an injured Powe, though, I think you've got to go with Williams, if you're only concerned with one year.

I think if Shelden Williams plays better for us than Powe has in the past, we're in big trouble - that means some combination of Wallace,KG, Perk, Baby is hurt... Shelden shouldn't see the floor unless its foul trouble for the other guys, or garbage time.

  • Let them hate, as long as they fear
Sheldan and/or Sheldon?? Who are these guys? Recent acquisitions?
And someday in the midst of time,
When they ask you if you knew me
Remember that you were a friend of mine

We shall see when Sheldon is in the game how well he plays.

From the Boston Brass point of view, a healthy Sheldon Williams
is less risky than (3) ACL surgeries on Leon Powe's knee.

I wish Leon success and would have wanted him on our team. I'll
watch him play and cheer him on in Cleveland, except we need to win every game we play against them.

Considering Sheldon Williams will be able to learn the system
in training camp, I expect he will be on par with Leon (if and when he returns).

When and if Shelden Williams plays like Tim Duncan, who will outperform statistically who? Shelden or Powe?

Anyways, agree with the OP, Williams will have a better year this year even if Powe comes back healthy. Remember also, healthy doesn't mean ready to play, particularly at the NBA level.

Haha

I'm also not a fan of such hypotheticals.

If Powe were healthy, he would have a much larger contract than Shelden. People shouldn't forget that.

Count me among those who aren't expecting Sheldon Williams to suddenly show a huge amount of improvement just because he's being coached by Cliff Ray.  The guy's been in the league for a few years now and was a four-year player at one of the best NCAA programs; as far as I'm concerned, he is what he is.  This isn't a situation like Perk, where Ray was basically starting with a big lump of clay.  I'm fine with that; if Williams gives us what he's shown so far - hard work, good D, good rebounding, that's plenty for the 5th-big man role.

Now, if Cliff could teach BBD to grab a rebound....

Is it just me or do we all like both Leon and Sheldon and want them both to play a little and play well.  The difference is, we hope Leon's team loses every game while we hope that Sheldon's team wins every game.   ;)

One thing that needs to be considered beyond statistics is the different ways Powe and Williams would fit on the Cs.  Powe is a short 4 while Williams is big enough to play the 5.  That means every second Powe would be on the court for Boston is a second that KG or Sheed or Baby would not be, while Williams works better as a sub for Perk.  You also have to consider their impact on team defense.  Powe is more of a hustler, but Williams is a legitimate shot blocker which will allow Doc to always have two shot-blocking bigs on the court when he wants.
