The Atlanta Hawks reached an agreement in principle with free agent forward Marvin Williams, a source close to the process told ESPN.com.

Williams is expected to sign a five year, $37.5 million contract as early as Friday, according to the source. The deal also has some hard to reach incentives that could boost the value of the contract to $43 million.

Williams' agreement came after more than a week of speculation and reports that a deal was done, but sources close to both sides of the process insisted that the deal was close but not done. Now, it appears that both sides are ready to take that final step.

Once Williams signs, the Hawks end an expensive summer that allowed them to essentially bring back all the key pieces from a team that made it to the second round of the playoffs last season.

The team re-signed free agents Mike Bibby and Zaza Pachulia earlier this summer, and they are currently in talks with Joe Johnson about signing an extension. Factor in the addition of Jamal Crawford via trade and first round draft pick Jeff Teague and the Hawks look even stronger than last season.

CB Draft LA Lakers: Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony,Jrue Holiday, Wes Matthews  6.11, 7.16, 8.14, 8.15, 9.16, 11.5, 11.16

They'll be seed 4 or 5 again and lose in the 2nd round.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I don't understand how this is a win for them. Seems like they overpaid.

I like the deal, I think Marvin Williams is an elite role player in the NBA. At around $40mil over five years, I'm happy with his value.

I think he's a very good and still improving defender. Someone who can defend SG-SF-PF and switch onto other positions. At his size, he comfortably switches down and handles bigger players. Good size, length and athleticism for a big wing. Good rebounder for a small forward. Then offensively you get good scoring punch at 13-14 points per game, with good outside shooting and efficient play overall.

I think you add up all those things over a game and you have yourself a pretty nice player. A good fourth or fifth best player on a title contender.

Marvin Williams is a solid guy, a really good midrange jumpshooter.  He's worth the money.

Doesn't mean Atlanta didn't overpay a lot for other guys this summer (re: Zaza, Bibby).

Do you think its fair to call him "posey-esque"? From your description that's the feeling I got.

Yeah, that's exactly the type of a player I think Marvin Williams is. One of those ultimate glue guy type of role players.

Except he's a lot better than Posey at this point in their careers.

A much better scorer.  He is the 4th option in Atlanta and is still putting up 13 points a game.
