Marc Stein: Let's face it: LO wasn't leaving LA. But POR was apparently prepared to give away a contract like Outlaw's to a cap-room team to make a play. - Hoopshype.com

Now I get it that they were willing to lose Outlaw for Odom, but does that mean they don't value Outlaw enough to keep him period?
I don't know how to figure out what part of a players contract is guaranteed, but could we send someone like that to them plus a trade exception to get them money? His contract is expiring, so maybe it doesn't matter...

David Lee and Nate Robinson are still out there. Giving them a partially guaranteed contract and trade exception for Outlaw, they cut our player and have some extra money for one of them?

Rondo, Daniels          F/A PG - Bobby Jackson or Tyron Lue
Ray, House, Giddens
Pierce, Outlaw, Walker
KG, BBD, Scal
Perk, Sheed             F/A big - Joe Smith or Ben Wallace
Can't stop, Rondo!

Well, first, they used their cap room to sign Miller I believe, so this is irrelevant, but to answer your question, no, we could not give them anyone to give them cap room.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
it wouldn't work like that.

Portland wants to move Outlaw because they have 2 other SF's in Martell Webster and Batum that they think are legit. They want to move Outlaw for a need, not a must..and I don't think we have the players they need.

Trade exceptions can only work in a 2 team trade, 1 player for 1 player + exception or 1 player for exception...I forget which.

Well, I think its possible they could need Davis.  He actually would fit in well with what they are trying to do.  They are pretty thin on the front-line, and are a little short on toughness.  I think they could absolutely consider sign and trading for Davis.  I believe they still have a little cap room left, so perhaps they would be interested in a deal of Davis ($4 million) and Giddens for Outlaw.  If they are still about $1.5 million under the cap, this trade would work.

Before everyone gets too excited over the idea though, remember, this is Portland...a team that NEVER gives up their young players for anyone.  While I think the trade could make a little sense, I would be absolutely shocked if Portland actually pulled the trigger.

I get the fact that they dont give up on their kids, but they were going to GIVE AWAY Outlaw just to make space for Odom? And if they really feel they have a logjam at SF, then a BBD for Outlaw would make sense for both sides. If that went through, I'd take Joe Smith and/or Stromile Swift to backup KG. Powe then would also be a good option come playoff time.

Portland could just keep Outlaw, and get Joe Smith themselves. I dont think Outlaw is in our future.

Well, first, I don't know if I totally buy that they would give up Outlaw for nothing but cap space.  My guess is they were asking for something like a first rounder in return.  If they just wanted the cap space, they could have simply cut him before July 1st (I believe he had a non-guaranteed contract).  I think Stein was either oversimplifying things, or simply had bad information.

I also don't think they have a logjam at SF, since Webster still isn't healthy, and is a major question-mark for next year.  They would have let Outlaw go to bring in Odom, but Odom would have likely been their starting SF.  Davis would be their backup PF, and they would then be left with no one other than Batum (and possibly Rudy), if Webster is not healthy.

Whats wrong with Outlaw and Batum?  They are both young, long SF's, who have proven they can be good role players.
