Today he said, "I would be surprised if Theo doesnt do something big at this trade deadline."  He then also talked about how the Sox had been in discussion with cleveland since May about Victor Martinez and that they have also contacted the Padres about Gonzalez.

Thoughts?

Why go trade for Gonzalez when they just got a 1B with LaRoche?  I don't really get that.  I still think we need to target Halliday.

Gonzalez is far and away the better player, is signed for the next two years whereas laroche is a FA after this year, and Gonzalez is also cheap money wise

Gonzalez is quite a bit better than LaRoche, though.

Did he mention something about the Dice-K complaints about the Red Sox training regimen?

Not that I heard, but I only caught the tail end of the interview

Ah okay. On a sidenote, I heard that V-Mart was offered for Bucholtz straight up and the Sox declined.

At this point I don't think anybody in their system should be untouchable besides Bard.  That kid has some easy cheese

Adrian Gonzalez is the only big name that I'd trade for.  I'd pass on Victor and Halladay.

Adrian is tailormade for this team and Fenway. He'd be a great pickup.

I agree.  It makes me wonder what would happen to Lowell (or Youk??), but he is a hell of a talent.

I still think the guy to target is Hanley.

FL needs starting pitching. Buchholz would step right into their starting rotation.

Buchholz, Bowden and Lowrie for Hanley.

If FLA doesn't want Lowrie, I'm pretty sure I remember the Sox have a quality, slick fielding SS prospect in AA.

Florida is not gonna trade Hanley.   He's under a very reasonable longterm contract for them and he is the face of the franchise.  This is important for the organization because they will be moving into a new ballpark and will need to sell luxury boxes and season tickets.  Trading away the face of the franchise for a bunch of no-name prospects won't help them.

And Hanley isnt the answer, dont we know what happened to the last inferior fielding SS that was in Boston?

they need starting pitching badly. they'll be getting two top of the rotation starting pitchers, plus a quality SS.

I think they'd do it....you might have to overpay, but Hanley plays the position that we have the biggest need at and he's the exact hitter we need to pump up the middle of the lineup.

Hanley is a much more potent bat than Renteria and his fielding deficiencies IMO are overstated.

he would be perfect.

getting another 1B/3B/DH really makes no sense. do we really want to knock Lowell out of the lineup.

if you're gonna get a big bat, get it at a spot where you have an opening.
