I like this deal for NOH alot. This will help that team immensely. Though both players are overpaid IMO, it's probably not by much, 2-3 mil/yr prolly.

This is a very very bad decision by the Bobcats.  There organization seems without much direction anyway so I guess its par for the course.

Yep.  New Orleans saves money in the short-term, and Charlotte saves a significant amount down the road.  The only reason this trade was made is five guaranteed contract years for Okafor versus two for Chandler.

I actually like this for the bobcats...money-wise.  That's all trades are these days in the NBA, money deals.  Okafor is signed for 5 more years at very high money.  If charlotte doesn't think he's worth it (which he isn't) that's a LONG time to have someone making that kind of money.  Chandler may not be as good, but he's only on the hook for this year and next.  NOH is taking a huge contract for some reason.  Not sure why they would basically give Chandler away for nothing last year, and now take on a huge salary in return this year.

Why the hell would Charlotte do this?  Does this save them money?

I'd take Emeka over Tyson any day of the week.
Saves them a lot of long term money. Chandler's deal only has two more years.

In that case, why do the Hornets do this?  Aren't they bleeding cash as much as or more than the Bobs?
The Hornets will save $5.15 to $6.8 million over the next two years depending on whether or not they end up in the luxury tax in 2010/11. Not huge savings, but substantial all the same ... especially when you're getting a comparable talent in exchange.
Okafor is better than Chandler.
I'm not sure about that. Why do you think Okafor is better?
He's healthier right now for one, that's a biggie.

Okafor grabs the same number of rebounds, blocks the same number of shots, and he also is a better offensive player. Chandler is limited to dunks and putbacks, Okafor has a greater arsenal than that. Also despite taking 4 more shots a game per 36 minutes Okafor turns it over less than Chandler. He doesn't shot as high of a percentage, but he's still over 50% for each of the last three seasons.

Essentially I view Okafor as a more well rounded player. His defense isn't as good as Chandlers, but its not far from it. His offense makes him a much more valuable Center.

Jordan and Larry Brown are giving up on Okafor, they decided he wasn't a franchise player.

It seems that I may be the only TC fan out here.

TC is a better C than Okafor. He's taller and plays better D.

Okafor has the game of a C in a PF body. Don't get me wrong, I like Okafor, but I feel he is still living off his name rather than his production.

Neither player is exceptional.

TC played only 45 games last season b/c of a bad ankle sprain, but he averaged ~78 games per the previous 4 season.

Just FYI - the Thunder trade was rescinded b/c of an old toe injury that they felt never properly healed. TC had surgery this off season to correct some of the issues.

Okafor averaged ~75 games per the past 3 season. His missed 56 games 4 seasons ago.

This trade is a little confusing. IMO Larry Brown wants TC b/c he wants to win now. TC matches up better with Howard and Shaq. Secondly, his contract is up soon. The owner has less $$$ tied up. Maybe for a sale? Who knows.

NO gets a good center, but ties up a ton of cash. You could make the argument that Okafor is currently healthier and maybe less risky, but they are also buying many more years which adds to the risk.

I would have to say though, it's not a salary dump by NO, which both surprises me and makes me happy. I hate dumps.... unless the dump-ee goes to the Cs ;)

Then again NO could flip Okafor to the Thunder or GS for a dump.

You never know.

I really like this deal for the Hornets.  On paper, Okafor and Chandler are similar, but when you factor in the systems they play in, the differences really show.

Playing with Chris Paul will increase Okafor's FG% and PPG.  He's never had a good point guard to play with (outside of Brevin Knight).  Now he can concentrate on defense, rebounding and get lots of easy baskets.  On the Bobcats, he was asked to do a lot (probably above his head offensively) because the team really needed it.  He'll do really well in NO.

Chandler, on the other hand, will be exposed in Charlotte as someone who can dunk and block shots but little else.

It seems odd that teams (not just the Bobcats) make these decisions shortly after deciding to sign to the player to huge long term contracts.  A little foresight would help.

I know that having a player under contract vs. a free agent gives you more leverage to improve the team, and that Larry Brown and long term are fundamentally opposed, but still...

Marbury was traded right after signing his huge contract. It happens more often than you think it would, buyer's remorse is pretty common. More often there are no takers! The Warriors would move Maggette if they could for example.

Something like this might actually put the Hornets back on the map.

Does this mean all of the trading this or that for Chris Paul talk would stop?  Say it ain't so.
