Maybe Shaquille O'Neal's new nickname should be the Big Experimenter.

In a new ABC reality television series that begins filming this week, Shaq will take on other top athletes in their own sports.

"Shaq Vs.," which is set to premiere Aug. 18 at 9 p.m. ET, begins filming Wednesday in Pittsburgh, where Shaq will take on Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in football.

Future episodes of the hour-long show will feature Shaq against Olympic swimming sensation Michael Phelps, boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya, St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols, tennis star Serena Williams and beach volleyball Olympians Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh.

lol this'll be must see tv for sure... hope he doesn't get hurt messing around over the summer

I know Shaq is a gifted, gaint, athletic, freak of nature, but I just think its ridiculous that he believes he can go against these guys.  These other guys are professionals in their sports which all take considerable training and experience to be as successful as they are.  Shaq doesn't stand a chance of outswimming Phelps, or out hitting Pujols.  He of course would be a difficult match up in boxing because he could overpower anybody, or football.  But without considerable training and experience in those sports it is very easy to get injured.

It will be entertaining, and Shaq will make some more money doing it, but I hope he isn't actually expecting that he will be successful against these guys.

Well it says that he's going to get to negotiate a handicap with the athlete, so I don't think Shaq expects to outswim phelps or anything.

Honestly though, this sounds like Shaq just stole the idea from Dhani Jone's Travel Channel show.  I forget what it's called, but it's actually pretty good.  Dhani Jones would go to a foreign country and practice their country's national sport for a week before matching up with the best in the country at that sport.  Instead of going to a different country, shaq is going to face different sports starts.  Of course Shaq makes good tv, so it's bound to be entertaining, but not exactly original
