Quote
Josh Childress tested the NBA waters again, gauging the possibility of returning to the United States to play basketball.

He decided to go back to Greece, instead.

Childress, a 6-8 swingman who played for four years with the Atlanta Hawks before taking the unusual step of jumping to play in Greece's top pro league last season, had his agent nose around to see what interest there was domestically, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

But despite inquiries from Milwaukee and Charlotte -- Childress even visited the Bucks -- nothing panned out, the newspaper reported.

"At the end of the day it's a business," Childress told the Journal-Constitution. "I was in basically the same situation last summer. Again, it's a business and you have to treat it as such."

I'm sick of these guys going to Europe. Either you can man up and come play make a few million bucks and prove to the world what you can do on the biggest stage or you can decide to want to make a few million more (even though you're practically set for life, unless you're stupid with money) and dominate a bunch of sub par players.

What other guys like Childress have gone to Europe? No other young in his prime NBA player has gone to Europe like he did.

What's wrong with taking a job somewhere other than NBA if you want to get paid? I'd move to another city for as big a percentage raise as what Childress got.

Agreed. If Europe pays a guy more and you're willing to do it, fine. Go have the best career you can. Not like he'd really be competing to be the best if he was in Atlanta or Milwaukee.
Go Celtics.

But I mean in general. I mean I like Josh Childress but now a few are saying they'd rather go to Europe and Russia etc for more money. And a few players have where they can't even get paid because the teams refuse to pay them.  I just mean I don't see why money's a huge thing in a contract if most have already made a bunch. Big deal if you missing out on a million if you've already made X amount of money.

Umm, who else has done it?

And personally, I see no problem with it.  I know I would love the opportunity to get paid more money than I can make here, to go play in Europe.  While it may not be the NBA, it is a chance to live a different lifestyle and try something different.  While for some it might only be about the money, but I truly believe that Childress also appreciates the opportunity it gives him to experience the world a little more.  Yeah, he probably wouldn't have done it if it weren't for the money, but that doesn't change the fact that its a good experience.

Honestly, I am sick of all of this "they have made X amount of dollars, they are set for life" stuff.  While money always plays a part, sometimes there are other factors as well, whether it be family, comfort, personal growth.  Sometimes it is just the right choice for you at the time.

Even if you've made "X" amount of money, what's wrong with making more? I don't understand why anyone in their right mind would turn down a pay raise.

Edit: Chris beat me to it.

How does playing in the NBA make you more of a man? It's not like he joined the And-1 tour. He won't be the best player in Europe. Oh, and he already proved he can play in the NBA, by you know, being a good player in the NBA. Sheesh. Maybe he likes playing there, God forbid.

I can't say I blame him.  If the money is better and he actually enjoys living over there then good for him.  Childress seems like a nice guy and I'm happy for him if he's where he wants to be.  I'm not going to hate on him just because he didn't come to us at a bargain.  It's business.

Exactly.  And it's Greece!  It's not like its Antarctica (no offense to any Antarcticans on this site...).  People in their mid-20's go over to live in Europe for a couple years all the time.  Is it really that much different for a basketball player?

Playing bball in Greece is ~equivalent to playing professional bball in South Beach, but for more $$$ than the NBA and only ~35 games a year.

More $$$, gr8 night life, shorter season, more time to party....

I'd buy that for a dollar!
