Roy, or someone familiar: Does the MLE exist for ALL teams, even those under the cap? Detriot has a shortage of players on it's roster right now. Can they not offer our the MLE? If they were to sign Baby with the remainder of their cap space, and the Cs don't match, would they only have Vet Min deals to offer from there on?

My impression is the MLE and LLE apply to every team. But it's strage that this is not being discussed re Detriot, and instead they're having to clear cap space to add Glen Davis...

However, teams that want to use their cap room instead of the MLE and LLE can "renounce" these exceptions.

So you only loose it when you're more than the amount of the MLE below the cap, i.e. $5.8mil below the cap this year? In Detriot's case, because they started out the offseason well below that amount, they do not get it now, even though they're now in the 'little bit' case?

Good to clarify. What I really meant is only having a little bit of cap space isn't really that useful as it doesn't give you that much more flexibility than other teams do with the MLE. You really need 10+ to have serious flexibility or ability to pay a big time player.

This is correct. They are only in the "little bit" cat. after 2 major signings.

Once they started using cap space to sign free agents, they lost the ability to use the exceptions. You don't get them back once you've lost them. So, no, they don't get it now that they've used their other cap space.

Can you S/T someone who is signed to an offer sheet?

I thought you could do a S&T to the team that signs the player to the offer sheet within the seven day period to match, but I'm not sure. Once you match the offer, though, you can't trade the player for at least 3 months, the player has to approve any trade in the first year, and you can't trade the player to the team that signed him to an offer sheet under any circumstances for a year.

Does anybody have info on that 7 day period?
