Consider this. Kevin Durant can only sign for a maximum of $13.6M based on 3 years experience. He is 20 years old, 5 years younger than Bosh, 7 years younger than Wade. If there was any one player to get (other than LeBron), I would argue that it is Durant. I think his value is maybe only surpassed by LeBron and maybe Chris Paul at this point.

It would still be VERY hard to pull off, but we'd have $3M more to work with than with Wade, and would be getting in my opinion a better player in 2010+

I still think it's impossible... theoretically you could give Pierce and Garnett new 3 year $30M deals to finish their careers in Boston and only take $18-$19M on the cap in 2010 for the two of them. Add Wallace and Durant and you end up with about $15M to spend on the rest of the roster.

So yeah... Durant!

Anyway, my possibly pointless point is that I think Durant deserves the far-fetched dreams!

You know OKC would have the ability to match right?

Ah right, of course... climbing too far out on these theoretical limbs.

So like I was saying... maybe the long-term dream should be resign Rondo, and clean house for Durant in 2011 =)

Durant isn't even a RFA until 2011, so this is not going to happen in 2010.  However, I absolutely think Durant could be a major target in 2012, when he could be a UFA, and the C's could have lots of cap space, or as a sign and trade in 2011.  There is no way the C's could sign him outright in 2011, since OKC would just match any offer, but if he makes it clear he won't resign with them, the C's could offer some expiring contracts in the summer of 2011 in a sign and trade scenario.

I'm still fairly impressed when you are arguably the most prolific 20-year-old scorer in the history of the NBA while being double-teamed every night and playing with a rookie point guard.

Mind you, he wasn't just chucking either. 47% FG, 42% 3PT, 86% FT.

He can also rebound, and will probably mature into a very good defender.

But hey, you were just trolling, right?

Durant will without a doubt sign a maximum extension even BEFORE he becomes a RFA.   Why wouldn't he?

Nevermind, I think you're right. There is some conflicting information out there, but I believe under the new CBA the team gets options after both the 3rd and 4th years.

So YEAH... after Pierce expires =)!

Because OKC owners might not want to pay an extra $10M when they have him already under contract?

The guy who wrote that article was confused.  Here are his words, which are correct:

Quote
Durant is going to be a restricted free agent following the 2010 season

The problem is, it is after the 2010-2011 season, not the 2009-2010 season.  Lebron, Wade, and the others will be FA in the summer of 2010, but Durant, Oden, etc. will be RFA's in the summer of 2011.

A little quick with the trolling accusation there!

I'm not so sure that Durant will be as great as many think. He'll certainly be an elite offensive player, but that is not enough.

Well, its been this way for a while now.  But yeah, there are team options for year 3 and year 4, and then a qualifying offer for year 5 (and that is the summer they would be a RFA).

not at all.  He is (at least to this point, he could become anything or nothing in the future) a fairly one dimensional player, who has shown that he can score a lot of points for a crappy team.  When he does something different (make his teammates better a la Lebron, carry his team to victory like many others, etc...) ill get excited about him

Uh, OKC actually has a good owner, a great GM, and a very healthy fan base. I know a lot of people knock on them for what happened in seattle. Also, he can only be a UFA if he takes a qualifying offer (doubt it), and any offer while he's an RFA would be matched by OKC.
