It's Official:
Cavaliers Sign Anthony Parker

The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed free agent guard/forward Anthony Parker to a contract, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced today. Per team and league policy, terms of the contract were not released.

Parker, 34, played in 80 games (71 starts) this past season for the Toronto Raptors and averaged 10.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and career highs of 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals in 33.0 minutes per game. He tied for 10th in the NBA with a 0.88 steal per turnover ratio and recorded a career-high 100 steals. He was one of just 11 players in the NBA to total at least 750 points, 250 rebounds, 250 assists and 100 steals during the 2008-09 season. Against Orlando on January 4th, he posted a season-high 26 points, while shooting 13-16 (.813) from the field. On Nov. 11th, he went a perfect 5-5 from three-point range on his way to 19 points in a win over Miami.

"Anthony will be a solid addition to our roster. He is a very good, intelligent all-around basketball player,” Ferry said. “Our coaching staff will especially appreciate the good shooting and solid defense that Anthony brings to our team."

The 6-foot-6, 210-pound guard/forward has played six years in the NBA, averaging 10.1 points and 3.4 rebounds in 27.9 minutes per game in 290 NBA regular season games. He played five seasons with Maccabi Tel Aviv (2000-02, 2003-06) and one season with Virtus Roma (2002-03), winning five Israeli Premier League championships, five Israeli Cups and three Euroleague titles. Parker was named Euroleague MVP and first-team All-Euroleague in 2005. He averaged 12.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.6 steals in 148 career Israeli Premier League games and averaged 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals in 90 Euroleague contests.

Good signing, I wish we'd been able to land him. Oh well I'd rather have Sheed than Parker and a less valuable big man.

It depends who we get on the wing though.

Might be good for them, but he's 35 so depending on the years this could potentially cripple them.

I always laugh when they come up with silly stats like this to make people seem special.

I'm surprised they couldn't come up with one that made him at least the top 10 in something.

Good pick-up for them, but anyone feel like this was slightly a reactionary move to the celtics interest in him?

No they need a competent backup 3 for LeBron. Sasha and Wally weren't getting the job done last year. Plus they've said they want to play LeBron at the 4 more often this year.

Actually, looks like he's more likely playing the backup 2 for them. He actually might start, as upon his signing Mike Brown commented on how he and delonte will battle for the starting position

Quote
"Joey Graham could sign with the Cavs to to back up LeBron James, an NBA source told the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Graham, who has spent his entire career with the Raptors, averaged 7.7 points a game last season."

That's on ESPN. I'm guessing that's because, again, Parker will likely play 2 for the Cavs.

The signing still makes a ton of sense. Delonte is undersized at the 2, and the Cavs always had to go with a pretty small back court. Parker would help fix that problem, plus he can always slide to the 3 if the Cavs can't find another option.

Not to mention I could see Cleveland play more Lebron at the 4 if he continues to get stronger.

If Joey Graham was a better rebounder, he would be a no-brainer as back up 3 for us. Problem is, his rebounding numbers are pretty weak. He is by far the most athletic available guy at the 3 who is UFA.

I sure wish we could work out a sign and trade with ATL for Childress, even if we had to include BBD in the package. Childress would be a tremendous guy off the bench for us. Great rebounder, shot blocker, 3 point shooter, defender.

Cavs can now go small (Anderson, Lebron, Anthony, Deltone, Maurice) and try to run teams off the court of they can go big (Shaq, Anderson, Lebron, Anthony, Maurice) and try to overpower.  the signing adds a lot of flexibility and is a good signing, especially if it is only a year or two and didn't take the hole MLE.
