UBUNTU: Alive, Dead or Somewhere in the Middle

Amidst all of the euphoria of 2007-2008 season, UBUNTU was the key word - the rallying cry.  It was a wonder to behold.

Is UBUNTU alive and well?

Can Rasheed be an UBUNTU kinda guy? 

Was UBUNTU just a one year dream season?

Does UBUNTU matter any more?

Is it ok to capitalize UBUNTU?  Am I a hypocrite for capitalizing UBUNTU? (I've just never seen it in lower case - I swear)

I have questions people!

I actually have no worries about rasheed being an UBUNTU guy, as much as i hate the pistons, they were all about being greater than the sum of their parts until dumar's started blowing up the team last year.

I mean, isn't that what we praised them for from 2003-2008 (or if not us as celtic fans, the media?) a team willing to play defense first, not worry about who on their team was the true star, and play true team basketball?

my only worries with rasheed are age and that mabey last year's awfulness is due to more than dumars admitting that that was a year where the focus wasen;t on winning the prize.

I truly believe that sheed, like moss, needs to be a part of something greater than himself and have a goal. sheed is not a guy that can play on a non-contender. Sheed is not a guy that can be the leader of a team. It's a definite flaw that will always keep him from being great, but not one that should show up on a team like ours.

I think it could. The problem is the concept of Ubuntu works for veterans who truly want to win. Rasheed obviously is that type of guy (or he would have retired).

Not to knock on our bench last year, but because they were young, they had motives other than winning (and you can't neccesarily blame them). It's why losing Posey, PJ and Cassell were so [dang]ing to the concept, as we lost key role players who fit the Ubuntu concept.

This is why I think Rasheed (and adding someone like Grant Hill) would fit into the concept. It also sucks that we missed out on McDyess because he's only in the game to win.

You defintely win the award for most UBUNTU'S in a post.

I think that we kind of lost that motto last season.  I think a lot of the team that kept that spirit and produced that championship under its guidance are still here.  But I think we didn't really see it kept up last year as a rallying cry, and wasn't as evident in their style either.  I think we need something similar to UBUNTU in its idea of collective gain, but UBUNTU seems to soft to me at this point.  I want something this year that is a little bit meaner and aggresive.  Something that resembles more of a "Don't mess with me."

Oh yeah, and
UBUNTU,
UBUNTU,
UBUNTU.

I just stole your award for most UBUNTU'S in a post.

I think so too.

 to me, the piston's whole dynamic during their hey day from 2003/04 to 2008 was UBUNTU, they just weren't as talented as we were on a position by position basis.

But it's hard to say they didn't use our formula. Play defense, don't worry about who the "man" is, pass the ball to find the open shot, and beat teams by playing as one unit, rather than as 5 separate guys.

I think Ubuntu (only with a capital letter for me :P) was still part of the Celtics spirit this season but not as much as it was in 2007-2008.

I had the impression that our players went one on one more often this season than they did last year. Of course, Ubuntu was still here (I recall some games where the team had 35+ assists) but less "strong". I guess that Doc's quotes about every player trying to carry the whole team on his shoulders after the KG's announcement was made, were true and representative of the problem about Ubuntu.

I think that Rondo's rise also has to be taken in consideration since he was no longer considered a "role player" by the media but the piece that changed (or was going to) the Big Three into Big Four. Maybe a few egos got higher due to the rise of some of our young players (Rondo and Perk basically).

I expect the team to show true Ubuntu next season, in part because our roster will be more talented (which allows you to trust your teammates more than when you must trust guys like T.A... I guess you see my point).

The 2007-2008 Celtics were a special team, Ubuntu was their thing, everything clicked for them and they played more like a family than a team.

I have no doubt that the C's will be amazing this season, and should win another ring, but Ubuntu was for one season only in my opinion.

Cowboy up was definitely a better motto, I always hated the "Idiots" label. I have a feeling there were a lot of players on that 2004 team that wanted to kill Damon and Millar for giving them that nickname.
