Marion Going To Dallas In Three-Way

Jul 08, 2009 9:39 PM EST
The Mavericks, Raptors and Grizzlies have agreed to a deal in principle that will send Shawn Marion to Dallas, according to NBA sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the trade will also send Jerry Stackhouse to the Grizzlies, with one source close to the process saying that a trade call with the league office to formalize the deal has been planned for Thursday.

The known parameters of the deal call for Marion to receive a five-year contract in the region of $40 million from the Mavericks and land Stackhouse in Memphis, where he will be bought out by the Grizzlies. Dallas will send Memphis $2 million by Aug. 10th to pay for the buyout.

Toronto will receive unspecified draft considerations and/or cash, but the involvement of a fourth team virtually assures that other players from the Mavericks and Grizzlies will be involved.

Good trade for the Mavs.

The relevant question for us (potentially, if we don't land Grant Hill) is whether Stackhouse has anything left in the tank.  Hurt almost all of last year, didn't do much in the games that he did play...  is he done, or will he come back and play like he did a couple years back?  He's a few years younger than Hill.  Thought I heard he was looking potentially to go back East and hook up with a contender.

I just thought about a possible Stackhouse buyout and whether or not he would consider signing cheap for a year with a contender.  Probably a longshot but it gives you something to think about.

There's no doubt at all that Stack becomes a free agent.  His contract's only guaranteed for $2M, it's $7M if they don't cut him, and Dallas has agreed (I believe) to send Memphis the $2M to buy him out.  He doesn't sound inclined to go back to Dallas, and Dallas doesn't seem inclined to try and re-sign him.

2 Things. I dont understand this trade. Griz get Stack, Mavs get Marion, but Toronto gets nothing? There's noway Dallas is under the cap and has enough money to pay for another players contract in a trade(dont even think thats how it works)

As for Stack a Celtic..I would take him. He'd be a great backup to Ray or Pierce. I still like the idea of somehow trading for Belinelli. The idea of a larger pg with Eddie spreading the floor at Sg sounds AWESOME. Maybe then we play smaller ball and have Stack play SF, then Sheed at C with Powe or BBD at PF
Can't stop, Rondo!

I don't want to pretend to be as narcisstic or knowledgeable as to say I'm the only one saying this, but:

WHY do we keep hungering after these supposed 'veteran' swingmen? Grant Hill and Jerry Stackhouse cannot guard Lebron James...okay no-one can really, but they won't even come within a hair's breadth of slowing him down at all.

While I deeply appreciate the need for a veteran, ball-handling, high IQ swingman off the bench behind Ray and Paul, when it comes to the playoffs, you're going to want a hard-nosed, athletic aggressive and YOUNG bruiser to attack the elite swingmen of the league and hamper 'em.

CJ Miles, even Anthony Parker, or a Rasaul Butler in a pinch, I would consider an upgrade over Stackhouse.

It's not offense we need, it's defense.

You can always give away more than you receive. Toronto will get a pick or cash.

Marion will have to be signed for a contract in the range of the contract that Dallas is getting rid of because Dallas is over the cap.

Memphis can accept whatever they want because they are below the cap. I expect they too will get a pick or cash (above the $ for the buyout).

Kidd (they resigned him right?), Howard, Marion, Nowitzki and Gortat, with Terry and Dampier off the bench.  That's a fascinating team.  Extremely expensive and kind of a patchwork quilt, but it could work.  If it doesn't they're going to go downhill fast.  Another Cuban masterpiece.  He makes the league a lot more interesting.

CJ Miles, even Anthony Parker, or a Rasaul Butler in a pinch, I would consider an upgrade over Stackhouse.

Grant Hill specifically helps because he alleviates some of the need for a backup PG.  He can handle the ball from the forward spot and let Eddie House play off the ball.  That's why I think Hill is the perfect fit for this squad.

Stackhouse is just another option that would be cheap and who would likely be inclined to sign here.  CJ Miles has a crappy contract and is generally considered not too much of an improvement over Tony Allen, and we'd have to trade for him.  Anthony Parker just agreed to a deal with Cleveland.  Butler's still under contract w/NO, I believe.

None of these guys are perfect, but Hill and Stack are both solid vets who've been deep in the playoffs and know how to fit in to the roles we're ask them to play.  Remember, too, that they'd be backups, generally in the game when the opposition's best wing player isn't.  Pierce will be responsible for guarding the LeBrons most of the time.

wow.  In about 2 years the Mavs are going to suck and be stuck with all these contracts.  I can't believe anyone would give Marion a 5 year deal now.

This trade has become a monster. Four team deal. Wow.

Bryan Colangelo has done a stunning job. He's acquired Hedo Turkoglu in a sign and trade for Marion, which has allowed the Raptors to keep their MLE and LLE, and allows them to keep their own free agents, and he dumped Hump's two year $3mil deal for expiring contracts. Talk a brilliant trade for Toronto.

Excellent acquisition for the Mavericks too. They got their man in Shawn Marion, and solid player in Humphries.

Trade exception for Orlando, and some cash for Memphis' troubles. A good deal for all four teams! Wow!
