"The Knicks offered free-agent forward Grant Hill two contract options during a meeting in New York earlier this week.

According to sources, the Knicks offered Hill the option of a one-year, $5 million deal or a three-year, $10 million deal.

Hill said last week that he wants to be "fairly compensated" after finishing a two-year, $3.8 million contract with the Suns.

The Knicks became aggressive in their pursuit of Hill once Jason Kidd came off the market."

???

I thought I had read they offered him a one-year deal for a portion of the MLE ($2.6M).  Big difference between that and what this source is suggesting is on the table.  Why would NY offer a three-year deal?   ???

Another report (from a NY paper) said the Knicks hadn't made a formal offer at all.  So, at this point it's just a matter of which newspaper you want to believe.

He wants to be compensated? Then I guess money is a big concern for him, more than anything. And we would basically offer him the same contract as the Suns two years ago.

I just hope they can get something done quickly with another wing like Parker, Wafer, Barnes, Bogans, etc. I'm sure Danny has a priority list, and he said he wants to get all signings done quickly, incl. Big Baby.

Why is money an issue? He played the last 2 seasons for less than $2 mil a year. And now he want to be fairly compensated. This stuff just doesn't make any sense. Grant doesn't want to play for the Celtics, and I hope he never does. Jerk

Makes perfect sense. A lot of players want to get the most out of their last paycheck.

Maybe its brutal work for him to stay in shape and at 1 million per he might as well retire and focus on business? Who knows. I always think its wrong to presume that someone should value X or Y. Will winning a title as the 7th man really change his career? Maybe he really wants to be a starter and make the most impact on a team regardless of the teams upside. Maybe he's thinking he stays on with the Knicks next year when they sign Lebron and S&T for Bosh and they win NY's first title? Maybe he just like D'Antonio

At any rate, could the Knicks really be dumb enough to put Hill on a three year contract? I thought they had fixed their (mis) management issues.

I think you're over-analyzing "fairly compensated," that phrase doesn't have to mean that he's looking for a huge paycheck or to squeeze every last dollar out.  I mean, we all want to be fairly comped, right?  When did asking to be treated fairly turn into a sign of greed?

Hell, you can interpret that statement as being "I just want to go to a good team and be fairly compensated, I don't need to squeeze every last dollar out of the organization but I don't want to play for the veteran minimum, either."  Wouldn't that interpretation be consistent with what we think we know about Grant Hill?

EDIT: And I'm discounting the liklihood of the "two contract offers" story, just because there's absolutely no reason for the Knicks to offer Grant Hill a three-year deal.  Why would they add salary for 2010?  I did expect them to maybe offer the full MLE for one year (which would trump what I bet Danny offers, a two-year deal at the LLE), but a three-year offer?  Makes me think this "source" is full of it.

The Knicks are definitely offering more money.

But he hasn't taken it yet.

I know it doesn't happen as much in the NBA as it does in MLB, but is there any chance the Knicks are just trying to stick it to the Celts (their Division rival)?

Yeah, I see it as the only explanation for offering such deals to Hill... because sports wise it doesn't make sense. Maybe they want Hill to sell more tickets but I'm not sure he is the type of player who has this kind of impact on the tickets sales.

Anyway, all the contrary reports on this matter make me think that we should wait to see what Hill or his agent have to say, because so far we don't know if all these news are reliable. The only thing that seems true is that the Knicks really want to sign Hill.

I don't think so... from reports, the Knicks had made offers to him quite early in free-agency. And the NBA economy as it is at the moment, I don't think there are any teams trying to inflate value of players for the heck of it.

If it was just the 1 year 5 mil deal, than that could be the case, but with the 2nd option being 3 at 10 mil I doubt it. They must really like him, becuase I can't imagine he's going to be any good playing the last year of that contract at ae 40...

Either way, its alot more money than the C's can offer, and with his wife preffering NY, it seems liekly he'll sign there.
