Scal: Keep or Trade

I'm officially a Scal bandwagon fan. I was a scal hater last summer, but he proved me wrong.I beg for his forgiveness. I just love everything Scal does on the court. His basketball IQ is second to none. At times he is more valuable than House & BBD. But because of our glaring holes, I'm afraid Scal expiring contract could be used as  a bait. So should we start our Goodbyes, or hold on and see. The best scenario to keep Scal  might be if BBD re-signs, and find a back SF (Hill, Parker, Barnes...) I don't think Doc wants to see Scal moved.

Depends on what kind of value we can get for him. I think he's competent to be the 4th big on this team and good as the 5th. If we can get better value by using Baby in a sign and trade than we could get by using Scal, I'd rather use Baby and hold onto Scal. If we can get better value by using Scal, I'd rather use Scal.

Right now, I think you hold onto him unless you're very confident you can sign Joe Smith or Oberto or someone like that who can fill the 4th-big role on the team (or if BBD re-signs).  I'm inclined to hold onto him right now; after what we saw last year, isn't he the kind of guy we'd be looking to potentially sign on the cheap if he were a free agent?  It's nice that he can fill in a little bit behind Pierce at the 3, too.

I wish Scal would come to camp in top shape. He is too flabby. He has vg BBIQ, and his 3 point shot is more consistent, especially in clutch situations. But his lack of conditioning is a concern. I know he was out extended time due to the concussion, but this was an issue before all that happened. He needs to become a workout freak like KG and Ray.  He confuses putting on weight (so that he can defend against 4's) with getting stronger.

I think the smartest thing to do is hold on to him (along with Allen) until the trade deadline, and then use their contracts to try to fill a hole.  This will allow Scal to provide depth until then, and the value of their expiring deals will increase as teams fall out of playoff contention. 

Of course the problem with this is that it would also involve keeping Tony around until February, and I am not sure I can stomach that...

Yeah, there's no rush to trade them right now. If you get a real good trade right now then do it, but their contracts will be more valuable in February when teams are starting to tank and are looking to trade veterans for expiring contracts to clear salary and minutes for younger players.

I'd like to move both him and TA for someone better.  he played decently last year but that's year 4 of a 5 year deal---too long to wait for productivity.

He's got a good expiring deal, that when combined with TA (and possibly House), could bring back a very good support player (or players) on longer deals. 

No reason to believe "Air Intangibles" couldn't be replaced with someone cheaper and/or better.

What I would love Scals to do is to get his footwork down.  I have never seen one player take (and make) more toe on the line two pointers than Scalabrine during the Magic series.

Trade and buyout is my favorite option, but I would like to keep Scal on the team. He showed during these playoffs that he could be a real boost to the team, even though you don't want to have him as the first big coming off the bench.
