I agree, a strictly lock down defender is overrated.  Posey wasn't a LOCK DOWN guy the way Raja Bell and Bowen both USED to be, but he played a good team D and hit open shots, making him valuable.  The other thing that made him so good was that we played really smart, and did the little things.  That sounds a lot like the scouting report of Grant Hill for the last couple of seasons.  He's not going to cover Kobe and hold him to 2 of 11 shooting all my himself, but he brings a lot of things to the table.

Another thing; making Kobe and Lebron and those guys work on D is almost as important as covering them well on the other end.  Guys get tired, and when they do, they take worse shots and have to catch their breath.  I can see Grant making really solid and smart contributions and both end and that is mort important than getting a guy labled as a "lock down" defender and leaving him on an island 1 on 1 with those guys.  You can't win that way.

Celtics key for those two was that Pierce, Posey and Ray could play them tight because KG and Perk could step out on them and force tougher shots.

Now they have Wallace who will also be able to do that.

I completely agree.  If PJ Brown could stand back there and be a force, Sheed can definately do it.  It's just a matter of understanding the rotations and being in the right place at the right time.  All of the guys we've mentioned can do that.

Billy Walker should be ready to explode now that the knee injury is over a year behind him.

You've got to think he would have gone somewhere in the first round had he been in this year's draft. C'mon Billy!

Would love to see one of the young guys step up and earn a rotation spot like that, but I want the Celtics to plan for them not to right now.

You guys are mental right?
Tony freakin Allen.
What's wrong with him?
Maybe you guys just haven't seen him play consistently recently due to his injuries, but i've been watching him since his Rookie year and that kid is a crazy defender.  He is also a VERY effective slasher, and not a bad mid-range shooter.  I don't think he's 6th man material due to his being a guard that can't shoot too well, but 7th or 8th man for sure.  He's just had bad luck these past 2.5 years.  I don't see him as an 'injury-prone' player exactly, not like Hill.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

  • Rondo = Good
There names are Rondo, KG, Perkins, and Rasheed Wallace.

Pierce isn't too shabby, either.

I am a Big Walker fan, but as a defender he fouls too much.  My biggest concern if he gets extended min this season is that he will commit fouls at a Mikki Moore pace.

My opinion is that his offense is already at a NBA level but that he still needs to learn to use is skills on D with out the fouls.  Hopefully the offseason will show that he has improved by working with the team during the season.  Once it clicks Doc will increase his PT.

Having a lock down defender is over rated.

Pierce was a better defender during the title run then Posey.

Celtics is about team defense.  They added a great team defender in Wallace.

Hill should be able to be a good team defender, much like Ray Allen was able to be.
agreed
We are however putting on the floor rondo who at times is the best defensive pg in the game.  KG the best defender in the game, PP a very good team defender and Perk one of the best low post defenders in the nba.  Sheed is good then TA off the bench or as some stated give walker a shot.  He won't back down from anyone.

A lack of basketball intelligence isn't bad luck. It's a fatal flaw for a basketball player.

It amazes me how his defense is consistently overrated on the Internet. He is as vulnerable to an upfake as anyone in the league, in addition to the problems with his attention span on the floor. The guy has six years in the league. It's past time to stop concocting excuses for his continued failures, and come to grips with the fact that Tony Allen is not and never will be a winning NBA basketball player.

We were beyond desperate for quality minutes off the bench in the playoffs, and Allen didn't play. Despite the attempts on the Web to spin that as Doc's fault, it isn't. It's a strong no confidence vote from a coach who's won a championship.

The money Ainge gave him was too much, and it was wasted. Hopefully, he can be moved as an expiring as soon as possible. Get rid of him, Danny. It's past time for Tony Allen to go.

TA shows to be a good player when he can start on a bad team.  Gets lots of touches.  Is in the flow of the game.

Unfortunatly, the Celtics are a good team that needed him to be a role player off the bench.  He has been below average in that role.

Based on his play this year in the D-league, Bill Walker couldn't lock down my grandmother.

The Celtics do not have a lock down defender at the moment other than Kevin Garnett.

We don't have anyone even remotely capable of being a lockdown defender on the roster. This is why we won't get past Cleveland.

That is our lone remaining need.
