Let's say we have an ideal off-season and we sign Sheed and resign BBD, then maybe pick up a 5th big who can play backup C (for the minimum). Let's say...Robert Swift (we could just as easily say Oberto as an alternative).
Break down the minutes for me:
Starting: Kevin Garnett (PF)
Starting: Kendrick Perkins (C)
Bench: Rasheed Wallace (PF / C)
Bench: Big Baby Davis (PF)
Bench: Robert Swift (C)
There are a total of 96 minutes (48x2) that can be allotted for the PF and C positions.
My guess would be the following:
K.G.: 30-35 minutes @ PF
Perkleton: 30-35 minutes @ PF
Sheed: 15-20 minutes
BBD: 10 - 20 minutes
Swifty: 0 (plays if there are injuries or a blowout)
People seem to want to sign Baby and Sheed very badly, but the problem I see is it will be difficult to keep playing KG and Perk a lot - as much as they have been played when they don't get into foul trouble - and still give both Sheed and Baby the kind of minutes they'll want.
KG, I'm sure, isn't used to playing less than 35 minutes a game, but I'd say that would actually be a good thing. Keep him french. Giving Perk minutes in the low 30s each night probably would be fine too. He wouldn't have to worry about accruing fouls so much.
However, with Sheed on the bench we really only need BBD to play 10-15 minutes a night, but I imagine he'd be unhappy if he went from a starter to playing spot minutes as the 4th big. Rasheed certainly won't be thrilled if he doesn't have a very significant role off the bench, and that would be much worse than BBD being disgruntled.
What do you think? Should we make resigning BBD a priority if we sign Rasheed, in light of the potential playing time issues?
