Joe Dumars is one of the few GMs in the league who'll go out on a limb for a first time head coach when others won't.

This is one of the best chances Tom T has had of getting a head coaching gig. Now he just has to hope Avery passes on the job, because appearantly Joe's first choice in an experienced head coach.

I am a little worried about this.  When Dumars first started rebuilding the Pistons, he discovered Rick Carlisle as an assistant and gave him his first shot at the head job.

I actually have an ulterior motive... I want to see our defense without him, and give a bit more credit to Doc on this department, although I know it won't happen regardless.

Definitely not a good fit for Thibodeau in Detroit.  Other than Prince, they have no guys who know how to play defense.  They just signed Gordon and Villanueva, two of the most one-dimensional (offense) players in the NBA.  Sure, Detroit might look at it as Thibodeau will coach them up on the defensive end, but from Thibodeau's standpoint, why go to a team that doesn't have the parts to help you succeed.  If I'm him, I wait for another team to offer me a job.

They are not going to sign a 1st time head coach after they just let one go after one year. They will go with AJ or another experienced ex-head coach.
