In reality, I am thinking that next year is the last GOOD chance we'll have at the title (unless we get lucky somehow).  The year after we can contend but we would not be favorites I don't think.  Age just has a way of catching up to players reaching their mid thirties.  And lest we forget, other teams (and players) likely will get better.

The 2 year window is based more on the rest of the league than our team. Two years from now Lebron and D12 will start to hit their primes. The C's will still be competitive, but we wont have the same chance at the title when those two guys reach that level.

But seriously, I think that we definantly have more than a 2 year window. Starting the 2011-2012, Pierce will be turning 34, Garnett will be 35, and Ray will be about 36 (and a half). Guys like Grant Hill and Antonio McDyess who are just about 40 are still putting up decent numbers and being logical 4th or 5th options on their teams, and they are no where near the talent level of Ray, Paul, and Kevin ( BTW, None of whom played like they were a day over 30 last year. Well, except Paul in the Orlando series but thats a story for another day)

And another upside is that Rondo will only be 25, and Perk will be 27

those guys put up decent numbers yes, but not great numbers. They don't even start.

We have this year and next, at most. pray for a good bench and no major injuries, as i am doing :D

Considering that after the KG trade was made, the window was projected to be 3-5 years, and we're about to enter year 3, I don't see that it's such a shock to think that they have a 2-year window left of being strong title contenders.

beat me to it, thanks.

actually, i was encouraged that ainge thinks there are still 2 years left before the window closes and the big 3 are in wheelchairs.

that means the celtics have a legit shot at 1-2 more championships and i can live in a state of denial about the future for a while longer.

life is good.  :)

When we first acquired KG I thought we would have a 3 year window. Two years have gone by and I'm ecstatic to hear DA say we still have two more years of contention.

How much money per year do you think it's going to take to get Ray extended.  I'm thinking that it might be possible to basically split his expiring max contract up into his extension and Rondo's.  Ray at 11-12 mill, Rondo at 10-11 mill?  Does this sound reasonable?
I think that's a bit much for them at the moment.

To keep the team from being financially strangled after this year, Ray needs to come down to the 8 mill range.  Time it for 2 years (maybe a team option 3rd year) to time it with KG's contract expiring.  Rondo needs a jumpshot and consistancy to earn 10-11 a year.  He's in the 8 mill range as well.  Having those 2 signed for a total of 16 mill after next year is much better than the 21-23 mill you're proposing. Rondo's contract will naturally increase as it progresses but PP rolls off the books the following year and then KG the year after.  Perk will need an increase in a couple of years.

If PP resigns at 9 mill a year, that still leaves the team squeezed financially in KG's last year--> 8 (Ray) + 9 (Rondo) + 9 (PP) + 9 (Perk--estimate what a good big man gets) + 18-19 (KG -- can't recall his actually final year of salary) = 56-57 mill a year just for those 5.  that's without any bench yet.

I'm thinking any chance of a title three years hence would be predicated on either a) Rondo becoming a superstar or b) Danny managing to turn expiring contracts/cap space into a transcendent talent, as the current phrase of the day goes.

While I'm certainly looking foreward to another two years of contending,I'm extremly nervouis about what exactly lies in store after that window.

Hopefully not another 22 years of bad luck and terrible drafts and signings, ouch

Let's not forget, only a few years ago we were the worst team in the league, and I sooo don't want to go back there.  Hopefully we can add some quality your players next year to allow us to remain competitive.

Either way, I'm a C for life

That 2 year window comment could mean anything.  Perhaps Ainge just means that he wants to limit contracts to 2 years if possible... so that they can have as much cap room as possible for the summer of 2011.
