I think one of the most interesting nuggets from Ainge's recent interview(regarding Leon) was his declaration that this team is currently looking at a 2 year window.  Very interesting if you ask me...

What about being in position for a a max-contract next year?

Is it a foregone conclusion that Ray will not be extended?

Are KG and PP expected to hit a serious slide in produciton in the next few years?

An interesting claim from Ainge, and if true, shouldn't we be doing everything possible via Free agency to guarantee a title?

Thoughts?

How much money per year do you think it's going to take to get Ray extended.  I'm thinking that it might be possible to basically split his expiring max contract up into his extension and Rondo's.  Ray at 11-12 mill, Rondo at 10-11 mill?  Does this sound reasonable?

I think this was actually a quote from Leon after talking to Ainge.  We have no idea if Danny actually said this or if this was just Leon's "impression".

That sounds reasonable, and a number I think both Ray and Rajon could live with, although Rondo may be looking at a bigger payday

Thanks for the clarification, I thought these words came from Danny's mouth, my apologies.

Considering that after the KG trade was made, the window was projected to be 3-5 years, and we're about to enter year 3, I don't see that it's such a shock to think that they have a 2-year window left of being strong title contenders.

I agree, although i think that projection was made by the media and fans, not management

TP, what exactly is shocking about this?

I thought this was interesting because this wasn't something that Danny said at a press conference, it sounds like something Ainge said to Powe as to why they couldn't keep him, and Powe relayed it to the media. Interesting, if so, and barring a crazy trade of Ray for a younger set of up and comers, I'd probably agree.

I think the safe answer is yes, KG and PP will have a significant drop off in production in the next few years. They're both already past their peak now. No question they'll need support from some younger players going forward. Hopefully, someone like Bill Walker can blossom into a legit contributor soon.

Boston Celtics 2011-2012 Roster:

Rondo
Wade
Pierce
Garnett
Perkins

With Ray Coming off the bench

There is no way that window is closing  8)

  • TRANSFORMATION INTO CHAMPION COMPLETE!!!
It's probably sad but true, if they run with the big 3, 2 more championship level years is believable. So let's spend big win a couple more, and start looking at flexibility the years after.

If the team plans on maximizing their chances over the next two years, I'm completely on board.  I think they came to the opposite conclusion last off-season, and it was a big mistake.

Actually extending Ray would be good if he came cheap and Ainge found a starting 2 guard to take his place. After this year I think Ray will really fall off, leg issues are tough for shooters to deal with and he keeps getting more and more of them.

But seriously, I think that we definantly have more than a 2 year window. Starting the 2011-2012, Pierce will be turning 34, Garnett will be 35, and Ray will be about 36 (and a half). Guys like Grant Hill and Antonio McDyess who are just about 40 are still putting up decent numbers and being logical 4th or 5th options on their teams, and they are no where near the talent level of Ray, Paul, and Kevin ( BTW, None of whom played like they were a day over 30 last year. Well, except Paul in the Orlando series but thats a story for another day)

And another upside is that Rondo will only be 25, and Perk will be 27
