To many media types are just to excited about players going to those places.

Didn't someone have an example of an ESPN guy saying three different guys were going to sign for the MLE in Cleveland in one sitting?
Chris Broussard mentioned the Cavs as the destination for pretty much every FA they asked him about, all at the full MLE...

I would think it is because we didn't have any sizable contracts expire after this season.  Whereas, Hedo came off the books in Orlando and Wally came off the books in Cleveland.

The Vince and Shaq trades obviously don't have to with the cap space because they were traded for guys whose contracts added up to similar figures.

I know that many of you are saying that they (CLE,ORL) are in the same boat as us, but shouldn't both of these teams actually have more cap space than us due to these contracts coming off the books?

Nope, just because a big contract expires doesn't mean you'll actually end up under the cap, or even the luxury tax!

We'll still be in tax land in all likelyhood even if we let Ray walk after this year.

living down here in knoxville, i don't quite have the access to the day-to-day details of the Celtics and the current options in free agency or possible trades ......

please explain to me why the magic & cavs seem to have all this money available to go after players left & right and we are left to sign the scraps that are left ??? maybe it's the big 3 contracts or maybe it's an erroneous perception i have - but possible destinations for many of the better free agents i am reading about too often seem to include orlando and cleveland.

thanks for any info.

p.s.  -  if anyone wants any updates on the Lane Train down here in Big Orange Football Land, i'll be happy to provide ....... laffs.

as fafnir said, they don't they have more hype.

I'f the cav's signed every FA chris bussard named for them yesterday, they'd be 40 million into the luxury cap, not to mention in violation of every part of the CBA.

To answer the OP's question, I believe that the Cavs ownership is willing to go way over the luxury tax and the C's ownership is not so willing. It's yet to be seen if the Magic will. If they sign Hedo they will be committing a lot.

that has nothing to do with it, they are still over cap as it stands today, and only have one MLE, despite what ESPN credits them with for players they are going to get under contract.

It's just that espn can't help but slob all over the cav's and report that every FA is falling all over themselves to don a jersey with the king.

The celts will get one MLE player (probley sheed) the cavs will get one, and the magic will get one.

So a question that I'm sure has been asked countless times so I apologize in advance: there is clearly a gap between the salary cap and luxury tax threshold.

1.  What are the exact figures?  I think the cap is down to 57-58 million?  Is that right?  Where does luxury tax start?

2.  If you go over the cap but are under the luxury tax threshold, what is the punishment?  Tax dollars but not as steep as luxury?  If there isn't punishment, what is the point of the actual salary cap number?

Larry Coon's FAQ is pretty much THE definitive source for all aspects, large and small, of NBA finances.

Well, to be accurate, we don't know what the cap is, or the luxury tax is.  That is why no one can be signed right now.  There is a moratorium between July 1-8, for them to calculate the cap for the next season.

And if you are over the cap, but not under the luxury tax, there is no punishment, you simply cannot sign FA's without using one of your exceptions (MLE, LLE, or veteran minimum), and in order to do trades, you are forced to match salaries within 125% plus $100,000.  If you are under the cap, you can sign free agents to any amount of money up to the league maximum (with a few exceptions, but lets not get everyone too confused right now), or up to the salary cap, and you can also make trades without matching salaries.

Tenn... You might want to do some research into how NBA salaries and the salary cap works.

good tip.

after that, i'll pursue a doctorate in bio-organic chemistry. should be a breeze.
