Marc Stein's post this morning at 3 AM

"Boston has emerged as the hot new entrant in the race for 'Sheed, with my colleague Ric Bucher from ESPN The Magazine crediting Kevin Garnett for not only convincing Celtics personnel chief Danny Ainge to enter the bidding but leading the Celtics' lobbying efforts.

Orlando, San Antonio and Dallas all have strong 'Sheed interest as well, although sources say that the Mavericks -- through president of basketball Donnie Nelson -- were planning to make an equally personal and determined pitch to Magic restricted free agent Marcin Gortat as soon as possible to match owner Mark Cuban's pitch in New York right after midnight to Jason Kidd."

Now we can just keep our fingers crossed and hope KG and Danny did their job.  Let's go Sheed.

What a difference two days make! I wasn't really in the "sign Sheed" camp during the first weeks of this offseason because I thought he hasn't got his "fire" anymore but now that I realize that we have real chances of signing him and that KG's speech could convince him not only to sign with us but to bring his old intensity, I'm starting to get really excited and I'm just hoping that we really do sign him now! ;D

Keep up the good calls KG!

That intensity paired with KGs intensity, Ray and PP's focus, and Rondo's unpredictablity.  No to mention Perk's scowl/stare.  This team has a chance of doing something really special

Getting greedy:  Let's sign sheed, focus on a backup 3/4 or 3/2, got Eddie, and keep Marbury around.  Anything else we can figure out midway through the season with our contracts.

This is a good point that a lot of people overlook. The small expiring deals we posses will only go up value as we get closer to 2010 and teams fall out of contention.

The report only states the C's are the newest entrant in the Sheed sweepstakes---not the front-runner.

I'd be ecstatic if Danny signed him but I just have a nagging feeling that this is dog-and-pony show by Sheed to get a contract from another team (more years rather than more $).  I'll believe it when I see the press conference announcing his signing.

I'd like to see the flimsy Lakers handle that front court for 7 games.

the front runners for Sheed are the Celts, Spurs and Cavs. I don't see any of those teams giving Rasheed more than a 2 year deal. I see him signing a Posey like deal where he has a player option after his 1st year.

So if we went into the season with something that looks like this at the 4 and 5, who here would be happy?

KG/BBD
Perk/Sheed
CB Draft LA Lakers: Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony,Jrue Holiday, Wes Matthews  6.11, 7.16, 8.14, 8.15, 9.16, 11.5, 11.16

I think the winner of the Sheed sweepstakes will be the team that gives him the longest contract with the most guarantees in his favor.  similar to Posey.  I figure the team that gets him will have to commit to 3 years minimum with 2 years guaranteed minimum and a 3rd year player option (in case the team goes in the tank he can opt out or if he just wants that guaranteed paycheck, he takes the option).  There may even be a need for a player option in each of the last 2 years.

I don't see him signing anything less than a 3-year deal.  I think his 'quality play' window is another 2 years as the first big off the bench and another year as the 2nd big off the bench.  I wouldn't object to Danny going 3 years on Sheed.  That would also time his contract expiration with KG's.

Tanguay was on Toucher and Rich around 8:30. From what I could gather, he sounded like he thought that if we let Big Baby go then we would have "cap room to get Sheed". ??? He went on to say that Sheed wants at least $8 million but might take a paycut. Sheed will be in Boston either today or tomorrow with his family to "check out Boston".

YES!

I still would prefer them to throw all their marbles at Artest, but that's a pretty unrealistic scenerio I guess.

They can re-sign Davis to 175% of his last contract and still sign Sheed to the full MLE without it effecting the usage of the MLE.  Luxury tax is probably what he meant.

Remember, they retain the early bird rights for Davis so his money doesn't count towards using the MLE for other players.
