WOW!!!  THIS IS SUCH A SMART MOVE.  WHY WASTE MONEY IF WE CAN JUST SIGN HIM LATER FOR LESS.
And what?  Now we can use that money on someone else?
OH WAIT.  We're over the freakin cap anyway so why the hell not sign him?  Are you honestly gonna tell me it's not worth the low contract he already has to make sure he doesn't sign anywhere else?
Yeah sure, you can say he will probably come back.  But what does it hurt to eliminate the possibility he won't?  I can not see any reason other than more money in the Celtic's pocket.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

He also takes up a roster space we may need. It would be quite irresponsible to offer him a contract (especially a qualifying offer) so soon.

You do realize a Qualifying offer isn't a contract per-se correct?

There is still a good chance we sign him.

Well, I'm disappointed for Powe and the team but at the same time, business wise, Danny took the right decision... The team allows Powe to visit the staff even if he isn't on the roster anymore, so we can hope that we will re-sign him in next February but you never know. I just hope that Powe comes back to this team someday, and sooner than later.

i expect the celtics to fill out their roster and then offer powe the minimum...powe wouldn't even play until midway through the season..i think he still stays in boston

Since were over the cap and the qualifying offer is way more than the minimum contract, it would cost the celtics almost what, 3 or 4 million extra with the luxary tax matching to sign powe to a qualifying offer?

It would have been asinine to extend a qualifying offer to powe when there is a good chance they can get him for much, much less. There is not going to be a whole lot of interest by other teams to get into a bidding war on an undersized bench PF who relies on his athleticism coming off his 4th major knee injury, espcailly since he won't play till Christmas at best.

I love leon and feel for the kid, but it would have been absolutely ridiculous to give him a qualifying offer so we could all feel warm and fuzzy inside.

What happened to Leon is sad, but you don't win titles by being sentimental. It is good business not to make a qualifying offer, with the uncertainty surrounding our roster.

Later, if he can be resigned for the minimum, that's fine - if management deems it in the best interests of the ballclub next year.

true, true. i also think that powe will be back with the celtics if his knee heals. letting him still use celtic facilities to rehab may reflect a "wink and nod" by ainge to powe.

no qualifying offer, BUT, heal that knee and you have a spot with the celtics.....i hope, i hope.

I'll never be accused of being an Ainge apologist, and I don't want to be. Danny's hit and miss with his decision-making.

But this move is entirely defensible. Powe's deal isn't some sort of scholarship the club should honor.

We're tight in luxury land, and we don't have a bench. We can't be giving money away to injury-prone players who may or may not come back out of some misguided sense of loyalty.

What happened to Powe is tragic, but this is a business and as we see every day in America, none of us are entitled to a job.

Especially when his QO would cost the C's 2 million dollars due to the luxury tax. That is a lot for a player who you don't know if he'll be healthy this year.

I think this was a good business decision. There is no reason to extend a million dollar 1 year contract to a bench player rehabing his ACL.

I hope that like with Tony Allen we re-sign him to a Celtic friendly deal that would keep him here two years if possible while he recovers. But I want to win most of all rebuilding a bench we can count on is the most important thing.

If we sign him for the minimum, rather than the qualifying offer, it saves the team approximately $600,000.  I can definitely see why they made the decision they did, although I absolutely want Powe back.

But they save 100% of his salary by not signing him.
