"The Celtics want to bring Glen Davis back for the 2009-10 season, but they will have competition.

Detroit and Memphis, two teams with cap space, both are expected to court Davis over the next month."

Most GM's claim they will match any offer with restricted FA's. This scares off other teams (as they don't wan to wait all those days while a team gets to decide whether to match and lose out on another FA), even if you don't really intend to match any offer. I wonder if there is a reason why Danny hasn't taken that approach.

Because he doesn't want the fan base to get p---ed at him if he doesn't match a high bid for Davis.

Question - do the Celtics get a compensatory pick if someone signs BBD?  I know they get comp picks in football and baseball when a team loses one of their own as a free agent.

I don't see how one relates to the other. BBD does not take exception money, and we will need another backup big if he signs some place else -- except in this case he will have to come through the MLE, LLE or the vet minimum.

Let's say Memphis decides that they want to go after him.

We still have right of first refusal on a contract.  Is it feasible that we bluff and force a S/T with a player on their team (Hakim Warrick?) in exchange for not matching?

Don't know if we can do that from an NBA rule perspective, but the value of Baby is he provides depth without impacting the MLE or LLE.

The truth is if we were able to sign Sheed as well as Oberto, we might not have the kind of minutes to offer BBD that he's probably looking for after starting in KG's absence.

I don't want Baby to leave, but under an ideal scenario (signing Sheed and an okay backup center like Oberto) it might make the most sense for BBD to sign elsewhere anyway.  That said...I'd really like to hold onto BBD for the sake of the future of the team.

Depending on who we sign as a free-agent, I see us matching Baby's offer no matter what, and then do a trade with some of our expiring contracts.

how many other 2nd round picks have been able to get this type of money only two years in?  Carlos Boozer, anyone else?
sometimes you have to bite your lip, exhale and move on.  So, I have.

[dang], I hope Memphis and Detroit are not going to pursue BBD actively, because in this scenario we couldn't afford to keep him, and we wouldn't have the guarantee either to land Sheed...

I don't understand why Detroit would want BBD since they have already Maxiell and they are trying to rebuild partly this summer while keeping cap space for the summer of 2010. It makes more sense for Memphis because they lack good big men but still...

This will be an interesting story, I just hope that if we can't keep Big Baby we can replace him with Sheed and other talented big men.

No one is going to overpay BBD in this market, and that includes Memphis, a team that is hemmoraging money, and Detroit, where half the fan base is unemployed and can't afford to buy tickets.

I predict he will get offers in the 2.5 million range.
