I think he will be back. His contract is quite good if you ask me. Eddie has travelled a lot around the league and I feel he has finally found his home.

  • Rondo = Good
In these economic times it's unlikely Eddie will find a better deal elsewhere, with a better team who value his services more than the Celtics.

He's not going to make more money somewhere else, and he's already familiar with Boston and we're familiar with him.  I don't know why he would opt out.

There are a few reasons I think Eddie will decide to stay:

1)  His upcoming contract is not awful.  It's not like he would be accepting a deal Pruit worthy.
2)  Although his shooting is unmatched in the league with his release and accuracy, not every team values a one dimensional guy the was the Celtics do.  He opens up the floor for better scorers inside, whereas some teams like their big names (Lebron, Rashard, Vince, Carmelo, Billups) to handle the ball on the perimeter and work from there.
3)  Someone else made the good point that Eddie has a family (we all see his kid at every game) and has been a journey man.  Settling down seems important to him and he has that chance here.
4)  Accepting his player options now gives him a better chance that the Celtics will either negotiate a reasonable extension, or possibly offer a decent deal next offseason to make him a mainstay.
5)  The fans love him.  The crowd goes wild with every shot he hits and he really feeds off of that.  His intensity is right in line with Garnett, and the Boston fans love that and he knows it.

I think Eddie stays.

He has all the reasons (listed above) to stay and I think (and hope) he will. His agent and him are aware that he wouldn't get a bigger offer on the market and Eddie is loved by his teammates and the city, I don't see why he would take a big risk by leaving to get a few more dollars.

Plus, I think that the re-signing of Marbury, if quick, should give Eddie another reason to stay considering how great they were when playing together as the second unit.

Yeah, I think he'd be foolish to leave.  If talents like Rasheed Wallace might only get the MLE, I doubt House is going to do much better than nearly 3 million a year.  While he is a great shooter, the reality is that he's a shooting guard in a point guard's body.

I hope he does return.  While I was somewhat a critic of his over the past two years due to his inferior playmaking skills, I don't think that matters that much anymore.  Rondo is clearly on the verge of or is an elite point guard.  He's going to play 35-40 mpg.  We can survive with Eddie's inferior playmaking skills for 8-13 mpg.

Eddie will be staying if for no other reason than $.  He won't make as much as next year's contract on the open market.

Depending on how the team's youth progresses this year, he may be moved with TA and Veal for a better bench player (hopefully Sac goes in the toilet and wants to move Nocioni).  I don't see him with the team after this upcoming year though.  Either the youth will replace him or, if they're not, Danny will need to clear the bench for much better players--including not resigning House (except at maybe the vet min).

The idea of Nocioni is growing on me as the idea of Sheed comes closer and closer to taking form.  I like Nocioni's game, but I really felt that we needed a solid big man and block scorere coming off the bench, and I think Sheed does that.  That leaves us room to use those other pieces to go after a SF with talent, and Nocioni is a guy that can do that and is in the perfect trading situation.

My only worry is that some other players from SAC will try to hide in his suitcase or crawl under his bus.  Anything to move from SAC to BOS.

I think Eddie opts out, but doesn't get much more per-year than he gets right now.  He strikes me as a $2.5M - $3.0M/year player, but I'm sure he's looking for security beyond this year.  If he does opt out, could we re-sign him to something like a 3yr/$8M deal without cutting into the exemptions?

I think we could use the early bird exception for him without eating into our general exceptions for other FA's.

Quote
EARLY BIRD EXCEPTION -- This is a weaker form of the Larry Bird exception, and is also a component of the Veteran Free Agent exception. Players who qualify for this exception are called "Early Qualifying Veteran Free Agents" in the CBA. A player qualifies for this exception essentially after playing two seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent (see question number 25 for details). Using this exception, a team may re-sign its own free agent for 175% of his salary the previous season or the average player salary, whichever is greater (see question number 24 for the definition of "average salary." Also note that for 2005-06 they used a defined figure of $5 million). Early Bird contracts must be for at least two seasons (which limits this exception's usefulness -- it's often better to take a lower salary for one more season and then have the full Bird exception available the next season) and no longer than five seasons. A player can receive raises up to 10.5% of the salary in the first season of the contract using this exception.

Putting myself in Eddie's shoes, I think he knows that he's in pretty close to an ideal location.  He seems to mesh perfectly with the rest of the guys, the fans love him, he gets a chance to contribute and play deep into the season (and he's making more money now, even at chump-change by NBA standards, than he ever has in his career).

But, he also knows that there's a good chance he gets traded in February because he's an expiring contract.  If he opts out and re-signs for a deal like I proposed, he knows that he's likely to STAY in Boston for a while longer.

I don't see how he gets much less than a one-year offer from someone at about what he's making now, so I don't see the downside to Eddie opting out as being that great.

Agreed. I really hope Eddie decides to stay. He's currently all of our scoring power off the bench. I also like how hot he can get and how opposing teams don't plan on him making an impact. How wrong they often are. Come back Eddie!

Man I hope so I think a lot of ' bloggers ' don't really appreciate his impact on this team. He's a game changer.
