I`ve read that the Twolves selected Rubio at 5 so he`ll get a bigger salary which will help him take care of his buyout(~5 mil)

I don`t get it .... Why can`t wolves pay the clause?
The buyout counts as part of the salary cup ?

I think teams are limited in the amount they can spend to buyout a player; the rest is up to the player.
Celtics fan for life.

A shoe contract should resolve it.

seriously shouldn't be that hard.

But it is a ridiculous how a player making 100,000 has a six million dollar buy out. Who would sign such a thing?

Also - if he's only 18, he obviously signed it as a minor. Which in the US, probably means he wouldn't have to fulfill it, especially if he wanted out before he turned. Now europe doesnt have those silly rules as they're drinking booze at 12 anyway.

Teams can pay only $500,000.  This is a league rule and comes from a deal that the NBA struck with FIBA.

I know that Rubio is trying to renegotiate his buyout.  A $5,000,000 buyout for a player making less than 100K per year seems excessive. A U.S. judge might well throw it out as an overbroad restraint on Rubio's ability to earn a living.

But I have no idea how a Spanish judge might rule.

I think the T-Wolves are lucky there is a max they can pay for the buyout.  Rubio is a flashy player that is coming to the NBA to showcase his highlights and make money.  I thing he really wants to be dealt to a larger market.  I'm not thrilled with his game, he is very frail for a guy of his height, and my thinking is, if he's not a scoring threat (I.E. Rondo from the outside), then there has to be more than a couple behind the back passes to make him this coveted.

Then again, I'm open to watching him play.  He may prove me wrong in time if he leanrs to put more than passing pressure on the defense.  That can come from shooting/and or penetration.
