Rondo at $50mil for 5 sounds great. But, I don't think Danny will do anything this season since we can match any offer he gets next off season. It's going to be a crowded market next year, but it would still be a gamble if Rondo continues to break out. There's what, 10 teams that will be far enough under the cap to offer players a max contract (not sure on the actual number). Do you think Rondo gets one of those offers?

I wonder what these deals he'll be getting offered next season will loook like. Nobody wanted to dish out this summer. I figure it will be likewise next summer, esp for a restricted FA.

5 years 50 million will still be 5 years 50 million next summer.

This sounds like a very reasonable contract for Rondo. I say get it done now before he improves even more and his contract demands get higher.

Hard to say what will happen. Out of all the teams that cleared a ton of cap space but won't be able to lure a superstar, will none of them want Rondo? He's no MVP candidate, but who wants to tell people that they dismantled their roster over a few years to get cap space that they didn't use? Plus, if Rondo improves like he has in the past he'll be worth more money than he is now. I think it's more likely to cost more to sign him next year than less money or the same amount.

yeah, i agree.  no one knows for sure what will happen, but I think the chances are that Rondo will continue to improve and continue to impress.  with KG healthy and a deeper bench, Rondo should look even better than he did last year.  I think it makes sense to extend him now at $10M/yr if at all possible.

Why would you say that?

Look at all the trouble restricted free agents had this year getting solid offers. Sessions took forever to get an offer, David Lee never got one, and Milsap/Gortat got fairly tame offers. All were well south of 10 per for five years.

I know people anticipate more cap space being available next year because of LeBron/Wade/Bosh but that doesn't mean Rondo's restricted status won't put the C's in a great bargaining position.

Next year's not this year. Teams are saving their cap space for next summer, not the 2011 FA class. The economy will undoubtedly be better. Last year Rondo went into the season seen nationally as a player who rode the coattails of the Big 3 to a title. Now he's the guy who practically averaged a triple-double for two playoff series. His visibility is higher. He'll be on sportscenter more often. He'll be strongly considered for the all-star team if he doesn't make it. And he'll be a better player than he was this year. I don't know what will happen next year but I've seen some pretty silly things when there's a lot more money than players worth the money on the market.

We all know Rondo is improving every year and that he is all star caliber. If the team is thinking in resigning him, I think it's a no brainer to do it now better than next year.

Maybe, but we don't know how many teams will be willing to spend, a 10 million a year contract is huge. How many teams would really go higher than that for a PG who in all odds still won't be able to shoot? And the Celtics would still retain the rights to match.

Good points, clearly many teams are clearing cap space for next season. There is no guarantee that the economy might be that much better (we hope it will but there is still 14+% unemployment in many big cities), that will be evaluated by how attendance figures and merchandizing money looks at the end of this season. Many teams may still be looking to save money and opt to not sign high dollar contract players yet.

The thing is, there is also still an excellent chance Lebron and DWade resign with their current teams. There is absolutely no one out there left on next seasons market that will command the salaries they will. I seriously doubt that there will be teams overspending for a 'consolation prize' level FA. I believe instead most will attempt to sign multiple players at the 6-10 million range who are proven.

Rondo would be wise to accept a 5/50 contract from the Celtics if it comes his way IMO. I think he is well worth it now, but in a couple years when he doesnt has Paul, Ray and KG to play off of? That may be the most he ever gets a chance at. As good as he is, he still isnt Chris Paul, Deron Williams, etc good.

For 13 mill a year, he needs to get to 20 feet consistently.

Rondo is good but I don't think he is $10M good unless he proves he can shoot 15, 18, 20 footer (whatever the magic distance is).  Without first proving that over the course of a full season, I wouldn't pay him $10M.  I don't think he will get more than this as a RA even if he does shoot well this coming season.  I say wait, hope he does develop a shooting touch, and then lock him up while we still have the RA status to work with.
