According to league sources, the Portland TrailBlazers have agreed to trade the 24th and 56th pick in the 2009 NBA draft, and the worst of their second round picks in 2010, to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday for the 22nd pick.

The trade has been agreed to in principle by the two teams. It should be finalized by the league office later today.

What's the point of this trade?  Something else has to be involved I would assume.

Or else the Blazers wanted to leapfrog the Kings?

They've been known to play draft day spoilers before, i.e. Roy/Foye.

Otherwise, maybe a component of the rumored Hinrich deal, or possibly a precursor to a Josh Howard trade (however unlikely)?

A lot of picks to give up to move down two picks, Blazers must love Buddinger.

Even when he says he won't do much, Kevin Pritchard is busier than most GMs on draft night.

They must really want someone at #22. Giving up two 2nd rounders to move up 2 slots in the first.

Well I think the Portland actually got the better of the deal. Giving up a couple very late second rounders is nothing to them. They have like too many players already with all their stacked foreign players, prospects, picks, etc.

I wish Danny had traded our second round pick last year and this yr's second rounder to move up a couple spots last yr in the first round.

Yeah, those 2nd rounders (both in the 50s, I think) may not amount to much.

Blazers still have a bunch of 2nd rounders to play with. Maybe they are trying to work their way up into the teens to get someone?

If a player can't make your roster they pick is worthless anyways.

Well I'm reading rumors that the Blazers are looking to draft-and-trade Omri Casspi late in the first round for another team.

So this maybe works as insurance for obtaining Casspi, a player the Kings - a team with a struggling ownership and multiple picks - likely would have had an interest in...

Yeah, they basically traded the 24 and a low future 2nd for the 22nd pick.

Hmm. Towards what end, I wonder. What could they get out of it?

Blazers do have a sizeable trade exception (nearly $3 mil). So perhaps the draft and trade of Casspi could return them a player, instead of a future pick?
