Right before the Brett to the Jets trade, The Packers Organization offered Favre a ton of money (20 or 40 mil) just to stay retired and become their "icon" or face of the franchise OFF THE FIELD. What if Boston could do that with our Big 3?...
KG has a contract that is noway possible of negotiating with 20 mil over each of the next 3/4 years.
But Ray's contract ends next summer, and Pierce has a player option.
Could they renegotiate their contracts to give up money to sign other players for the bench for the next few years?
In return though, could Boston pay them after retirement a ridiculous amount of money to be spokesmen/mascots as the Big 3 for years after for continued Celtic Pride?
I figure the money would come from somewhere else other than player payroll, as I expect Favre's money would have come from somewhere else, such as "business expense acct" or "advertisement funds"
Could this be possible?
Can't stop, Rondo!

I wouldn't want to be in Stern's office when he found out about it. I could see Obama trying to hold congressional hearings

I have doubts that the players union would approve this or there might, in fact, be a league bylaw or something in the CBA prohibiting it.  I wouldn't be surprised.

The player signs a performnce contract then renegotiates to pay a portion of that contract in another capacity?  I just don't see that flying with the league.  Especially if its for salary cap circumvention purposes if I'm reading this right.

Didn't Minny lose like 5 #1 draft picks for one deal (not as bad as these three deals)? what would the punishment be? No draft picks and a $30M hard cap for the next 10 years?

I think the difference is that the Packers made the offer after his contract was up

1) You can't renegotiate contracts if you're above the salary cap, and you can *never* re-negotiate them downward; and

2) Teams can't pay players additional compensation above and beyond player salary.  If they do, it counts against their salary cap.

I've often wondered. Can you give "gifts". Like could Mark Cuban give Dirk cars every Christmas?

Nope, I'm almost positive that that would count as compensation.  Teams can't pay "player coaches" a separate coach's salary, either.

I don't know if Cuban is married, but I assume Cuban's wife can't give Dirk's wife a car either. Actually I am almost positive about that, but just to double check..

I wouldn't want to be in Stern's office when he found out about it. I could see Obama trying to hold congressional hearings

Can't, basketball has no anti-trust exemption.

Thats how the government gets to meddle with baseball and football, they claim they have overseeing powers because of the exemption.

Wait a second. I see what you're saying but they call GM and Ford in and they don't have overseeing powers over them, do they? They also called in a game show once.  I just figure they pull in anyone they want to make themselves look important whenever they want to

  • TRANSFORMATION INTO CHAMPION COMPLETE!!!
Ray and Paul, if he opted out, could just sign for the veteran's minimum, and then Wyc could give them lucrative no-show jobs after they retire, just like on the Sopranos.

Congress can issue a summons one must answer, to the best of my knowledge only on grounds of illegal activity, and people have to attend. (roy will probably have a more in depth explanation shortly :D)

It gets somewhat muddy with regards to other hearings. congress can hold as many hearings as it want's, but it can't compel people to attend. GM, for instance, attended because it wanted to get in on the bailout money. It was in its best interest to put its best foot forward and give it's rationale as to why it needs bailout money. Congress had a carrot to hold in front of them, namely $$.

But if congress wanted to talk to me about, i dunno, the current state of cubicle calenders in the American work place, it could summon me to a hearing, but i don't HAVE to attend.

So, assuming no allegations of a break with the law, i don't think congress can compel the NBA to follow some sort of congressional basketball guidelines, like they do with baseball and football. I;m sure the NBA would attend hearings, but congress doesn't have the same Carrot if you will, that it does with regrades to sports with anti-trust exemptions.
