When can we actually sign a player?

I am just wondering ever since the season was over for the celtics who is going to be the next celtic and how long would it be.. I really hope it is now right after this pathetic showing the magic just put out on the floor but does anyone know? Could we sign someone tomorrow if we wanted to?

We can begin negotiating on July 1, and begin signing players on July 8.

I know what you mean.  I just want to put this overall fairly lackluster and disappointing off-season behind me and begin on next season.

The quiet period used to be 2 weeks but I think it is down to one week now that the accountants have has time to refine their spreadsheets etc.

Teams can't make trades between July 1 and July 8.  However, some trades can be completed presently (like the Philly-Toronto deal).  In order for that to happen, the players included can't be free agents (or have the potential to become free agents via an option) this coming off-season.

Yes, teams can make trades as soon as their seasons are over, right up through draft night, so long as no impending FAs or players with options are involved.  We've already seen several this year, e.g. Reggie Evans for Jason Kapono.

Timing

Much of the activity of this summer will be phases dictated by league rules. Right now you can talk and execute trades, with everybody but Orlando and the Lakers until the end of the finals, and for everybody with a contract in place for next year. Want to plan a draft--you won't know the final list of early entrants until after the deadline for withdrawal on June 15. Plan for a 58th pick, and maybe a top ten, or teens, or bottom of first round, or another place(s) in second round, or some combination thereof. With 29 other teams, discuss moving players for players, players for picks, picks for players, and multiple combinations of each. Then on draft night be ready to junk all the plans and make new ones when players unexpectedly slip (or are inexplicably taken higher), teams dump picks for cash or overspend to move up, or the landscape shifts with needs turned upside down with a blockbuster trade that completely jumbles what had appeared to be strengths or weaknesses.

Want to know what rookies are drafted where--that will be known the evening of June 25th, revised 18 times that night and a dozen times in the next three days. Ready to pick up free agents--can't even talk to any* but your own until the moratorium period from July 1-7 during which the league audit will determine the Salary Cap for the upcoming season.

It is during this time period that the NBA and NBPA conducts an audit that assists in the determination of the new Salary Cap figure for the following season which will be in effect on the date following the day the moratorium is lifted.
