I just don't see Glen Davis bringing back anything substantial in a sign and trade. I don't think anyone would give up anything of importance to land him, not on top of the pay check they're going to have to write.

Maybe a future second round pick or something ... but that's about it. Something that's easy to discard and holds little value to the team that's acquiring BBD.

Oh, I don't expect it to be a big trade.  I think the absolute best they could do would be something like Nocioni...and that is probably a stretch.

More likely though, I think they could turn him into a veteran bench player who fills a need for the C's, but was superfluous for the team signing Davis.

Or, an asset like a trade exemption.

If it were for a player, I think it would be looking at player like Speedy Claxton, Raja Bell (although he might be unlikely), Charlie Bell, Keyon Dooling, Trenton Hassell, Edjuardo Najera, Earl Watson, Etan Thomas, Brendan Haywood.

They are not really prizes, but could step into the C's rotation as veterans.  Many of them may even be buyout candidates anyways, if they aren't traded.

The Celtics are in a position right now, where they have limited resources to solidify their roster, and they currently have 1 bench player with any experience under contract (and he is ideally a 9th or 10th man/situational shooter).  It is going to be tough for them to fill all of their holes through FA, and other than Davis, all of their other minor trade assets are nothing more than expiring contracts with little to no other value.  So in order to entice a team to give up a player who may not have a terrible contract (even if they are an aging role player on a rebuilding team), they may have to use Davis in a sign and trade to get it done.

Age isn't important. Talent is.

These bench players are likely only going to be here for one season anyway ... all that matters is that one year.

If the older player figures to be better for next season, then he's the guy you want. If he doesn't, you don't want him, or if the injury concerns are too much, you don't want him.

There's going to be a lot of roster turnover so long as so much money is tied up in the starting five. I think folks should get comfortable with a revolving door of role players, many of which will be older and only here for a year or two.

Agreed.  And I think we also have to realize that there might be some veterans who did not get much run on rebuilding teams that could still be helpful on the C's.  I think the C's need to go after some proven talent that still has plenty in the tank, but they also will be looking at filling out the roster with some minimum veterans who will be down near the end of the bench, so they aren't stuck with only kids if injuries hit.

We need to add one high quality big, as in 7 footer like Pachulia, and another center as well imo.

I also think we need 2 people who can back up Pierce, and ideally they could also back up at the Four, ala Posey or Nocioni.

Is the following realistic financially, let's say Glen Davis goes elsehwere and we trade Scal And Tony for something.

Pachulia, Ratliff (can he still defend?), Kleiza, buy a pick and take Casspi.

I like Baby but he splits the 4 and 5 instead of the 3 and 4, which is the more vital split in order to save Pierce for the post-season.

Perk/Pachulia, Ratliff
Garnett/Pachulia, Kleiza, Powe
Pierce, Kleiza, Casspi, Walker
Ray, House, Giddens, Walker
Rondo, House, Pruitt

Too expensive?

you can't get both zaza and klieza, they are both going to want a significant chunk, if not all, of the MLE.

I don't expect to get a serviceable role player in a Davis sign and trade -- someone who can, or is a threat to, crack the C's rotation ... Or even someone who's at the end of the rotation as a 10th or 11th man -- I'd be very surprised if that type of offer was available.

The cost of Davis' contract + role player is very high for what BBD brings to the table. I don't think anybody will be willing to pay that cost.

Well, I think this will only happen if another team is actually willing to give him an offer sheet.  If no team actually wants him, then he will just return the the C's, and fill one of the holes.

But I still think it is much more likely than a trade of Ray or Rondo, which are much harder to complete because they are dealing with much larger salary numbers, as well as much more talent.

it doesn't come from the MLE, but you still can't get both klieza and zaza for 5.3 million total.

they are both better players than that. I expect klieza to get 4 or so, and zaza to get at least 4, if not the whole MLE.

thanks and one more ?.  So even if we don't sign Baby the non-MLE money we would have used to resign him is not available for free agent?  Outgoing player via not signing him (Davis) doesn't free up money because his deal was up?  Does non-MLE or LLE money only get freed  up after trades?  Sorry for basic questions...

no prob

We are way over cap, no matter what happens with davis. the only money we will have this year to spend is the MLE, the LLE, and of course, minimum money contracts.

Well, the crux of it all comes down to what is the bigger risk, planning on keeping the best starting 5 in the N.B.A intact and having a marginal bench (screwed via injury and possibly fatigue)......OR.........build a fantastic, deep bench and risk screwing up chemistry by breaking up the best starting 5 in the N.B.A.

Major injury and we're probably screwed either way.  But fatigue really does concern me.  If we have a marginally good bench how many minutes is Pierce going to play next season.  Whichever direction we go I hope the Celtics are prepared to give a backup to Pierce MAJOR minutes, even if it means not going for best record.  Of course you still go for best record, but you COMMIT to doing it while still getting significant rest for Pierce.  In other words, don't sign a lightweight backup for Pierce then decide you don't like him and overplay Pierce.  Whoever you get you better play him a lot during the season.

Can we not afford to resign BBD and sign Zaza for most of the MLE, then add a PG like Flip Murray for the LLE.  THat leaves us looking for a trade to acquire a swingman like Barnes or Posey.

TA's gotta go because we have three versions of him and he's the most expensive with the least upside.
