With Paul Westphal getting the Kings job, that fills all of the coaching jobs for next year, leaving Thib's without a head coaching job.  I wonder what the chances are of him returning to the Celtics bench for next season?  I have to assume it's pretty good, but anyone have any insight as to other teams that may try to lure away  the free agent?

check out the front page.

I kind of think Thibs has a semi deal in place that if doc steps down to spend time with the family at the end of this window in a year or two and he's still on the bench, then he gets the head coaching job.

I have no proof of the above, it's just a feeling.

Doc and Danny are already talking as if him coming back is a done deal.

I have a feeling Doc is going to be taking some time off soon, and Thibodeau will be taking over as head coach...I am not sure if that's a good thing or not.

http://www2.nesn.com/boston-celtics/2009/06/10/report-thibodeau-out-of-kings-candidacy-will-return-to-celtics/?cb

Holley reporting about a half an hour ago that Coach Tom Thibodeau has withdrawn his application for head coach to the Sacramento Kings job and will be returning as Assistant Head Coach of the Boston Celtics.

While I am rather torn about the situation because I think Thibs has earned his right to get a hold of his own team and see what he can do has the Head guy, I am delighted to see him return to the fold as he is an excellent compliment to Doc Rivers and the pair, along with Coach Ray and the others, make one of the best overall total coaching staffs in the league.

I hope he hangs around long enough to become the C's next head coach. One is never sure how long Doc is going to want to coach as his regular comments about being a family guy first and a coach second sound like he is going to get sick about being away from the family as much as he is at some point and say that it's time to stop coaching in Boston.

Good news.  Glad to see him return.

With the possible (well needed) turnover that should take place on the bench, it would be good to keep the turnover in the staff to a minimal.

I have the same worries. Running the defense is a lot different than being in charge of the whole team. A lot more headaches and issues dealing with personalities and egos.

They should kick Doc upstairs as Senior VP of Player Personnel.  He could handle the PR and soothe egos.  But let Thibodeau coach the team on the floor.

Welcome back Thibs.

Thibs is an idiot -- he's definitely coming back -- to the detriment of his own career.

Why is he an idiot?  The Kings were jerking him around, and it was clear that he was their third choice.  If he didn't withdraw, it's doubtful he would have gotten the job anyway.

He's not even their 2nd choice according to reports. What if he sits in holding for 2 weeks only to not be chosen and the Celtics feel the need to hire an assistant coach?

He wasn't the first choice for either job, this is a smart move by him, it ensure's his job with the celtics continues.

Plus, as i said, he has to know that doc talks about stepping down after every year to be with his family. I have to think that he would be our first choice (he may not be, but i think he is) so it is smart of him to maintain his hold on the 2nd in command chair for the celtics when he may be as little as a year away from a promotion.

Thibodeau is an idiot for staying with Boston. Just like he was an idiot for staying with Jeff Van Gundy all those years in NYC and Houston. He's the one who's doing all the harm to his coaching career. Nobody else.

This is the reason why he'll continue to be unlikely to receive a head coaching offer. He needs to move to a new club ... as an assistant if he can't get a head coaching gig.

Thibodeau is killing his own chances at advancement. That's why he's an idiot.

Why move to a new team?  I'm assuming that you're suggesting Thibs would be closer to a head coaching position if there was a coaching change.  However, if the team he moved to was poor enough to warrant a coaching change next season, there's also a strong possibility that Thibodeau's star would lose some luster.

The guy has a level of comfort here.  He'd leave for a better opportunity, but I don't see why he'd make a lateral move.
